A8 has a very different sound from ceramic, a much smoother A2-like top end with good grind and plenty of bottom. A more violin like quality than the bite we associate with ceramics.
I don't know that any magnet maker is making A8 rod magnets though. I have some A6 rods I have yet to try out but I doubt they'll be all that great. I don't think either A6 or A8 would be so hot in a rod magnet pickup and there would be major string pull issues, especially on a middle or neck pu. The tone with A6 is a lot like just cranking the bass knob up on your amp, a pretty unbalanced tone. A8 is much more balanced but it would pull on the strings more.
But this is just based on my experience with A6 and A8 bar magnets, so it's still possible that A6 or A8 rods would sound great.
