The quest for a good Heavy Metal tone

Hello!

I have two guitars, a Japan made Ibanez RG470 with 3 Ibanez pickups (V7, S1, V8) and a Korean B.C. Rich Ironbird with 2 Seymour Duncan pickups (Jazz & Invader). I have 2 Japan made BOSS ME-8 Multiefect units and 3 amps (USA made Peavey Bandit 112, Chinese Fender Frontman 212 and Chinese Behringer GMX1200 head and 4x12 Behringer cabinet). So... :D

I'm thinking of selling Fender Frontman 212 and probably Behringer too and buying Peavey Bandit 75 (I know a guy who sells it and it's in a great condition) and then using both Bandits for the band practice.

So the setup I'll have then will be something like that:

Guitar (RG470 / Ironbird) --> BOSS ME-8 --> Peavey Bandit (x2)

Do you think I can get a good Heavy Metal tone this way (I'm into old school Metal, like 80's Metallica sound etc.)?

I've read here that you can get good Metal tones from a similar setup, so does anyone have any presets (settings) for good Metal tones with BOSS ME-8 and would be willing to share them with me?

Thank you!

I think it was Peavey Bandits with HM-2's in front that Entombed used on LHP & Clandestine. If they're good enough to define a genre with...

Bandit red stripe USA Made. Really good metal tone without a ME-8. Totally veritile amp that can be had cheap. Approx $150 (used). great for practice and home use. Its been a secret for a lot of bands to use the bandit to record with.

Re: The quest for a good Heavy Metal tone

Thank you for your comments. What about BOSS ME-8, any comments? Do you know some good settings (presets)?

"I'm into old school Metal, like 80's Metallica sound etc"

If you consider overly mid scooped and harsh tones to be "good heavy metal" tone, then yeah, you can get that.
Good luck being heard in a full band mix and having anything resembling a decent recorded tone with a sound like that though ;)

Re: The quest for a good Heavy Metal tone

Well I don't see Hetfield had problems being heard back in '86.
So neither will he, if he's not a sound weirdo.

Re: The quest for a good Heavy Metal tone

The problem is with the Ibanez pickups (V7, S1, V8), Korean B.C. Rich Ironbird, Boss ME-8, Peavey Bandit 112, Chinese Fender Frontman 212 and Chinese Behringer GMX1200 head and 4x12 Behringer cabinet.
Replace all that with good sh*t and you will be all set.

The first Dismember album also. They got that sound by turning the mids all the way up and turning everything else down. That is for real.

Re: The quest for a good Heavy Metal tone

I have one more question regarding my combo amp Peavey Bandit 112 (Solo Series, USA made, 80W, 12"). When I turn the volume over 5 (with full drive/gain) the sound gets corrupted as if the amp is too loud for its 12" speaker. Would I solve this problem if I bought something like that:

Is the amp in the combo powerful enough for both speakers? Or is that speaker inapproprieate at all (maybe for heads only)?

Thank you!

Back off the gain and turn down the low end...those amps have plenty of both. Don't spend any money on something like that. Save for a good tube head and 2X12 or 4X12.

Re: The quest for a good Heavy Metal tone

Why don't you sell 3 amps + 1 Boss unit + Ibanez, and get a real amp like Engl?

Re: The quest for a good Heavy Metal tone

^ +1

for me, all that gear is garbage. Get a good Engl like the Screamer or Fireball and you will get in no time that 'heavy metal tone' you're talking about.

edit: Obviously Engl has better amps, but for a starting point the above mentioned amps would be a good choice.

+1 on selling all the stuff. Just get one great amp that goes metal without the boss unit. Blackstar is a great choice if you don't want to spend a lot of money. A good high gain tube amp, an od pedal, and you will have much better metal tone than your boss unit.

Re: The quest for a good Heavy Metal tone

no ****ing way. really?

Yep, take a HM-2 and turn all 4 knobs all the way up and play it in front of a semi-dirty amp = the swedish DM sound. Better have a noise suppressor or a quick foot, squeal city.

They recorded those records with the Bandits. I think they used 50w 800's live, if my memory doesn't decieve me.

I toured with Entombed / Merauder last winter. Entombed used the DS1, 50W JCM800 and a JCM900 live that tour. JCM800's were preferred though.
Guitars are Gibsons (V's and Pauls). Alex had a lot of pedals running, mostly tuners with wich he split his signal to the different amps.

In the older days they did use the HM2 with a 30 or 40 watt amp to record. A Digitech Super American Metal will also get you close to that Clandestine sound. Just dime bass and treble.

Re: The quest for a good Heavy Metal tone

Merauder, LOL, now I'm gonna have that "Gangsta" song stuck in my head.

Entombed haven't used the HM-2 for a while, I think they got away from it around "to ride...", but I'm pretty sure Brian Izzo (Trap Them) uses one, and Black Breath.
