The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

SO, i just ordered my new jackson a couple of days ago and now looking for a relatively cheap(around 350$ someplace) combo amp I can use to play with my band.
I dont really know how loud it should be to play with a drummer and bass, and since the drummer in the band beats the s**t out of the kit, i bet it should be around 80w?... I think, can only afford solid state in that price range as I do not have the possibility to buy used (dont find much used here in norway)

i have been looking for a while and found a couple of amps, but dont know how they will sound...and if they will be lound enough for smaller gigs(oh and i play mostly metal such as Slipknot, Mastodon, Iron maiden, Megadeth and Stone sour) so i think of one that would do well with pretty high gain, but also have a good enough clean channel for some softer songs...

the amps i have been looking at so far has been:

Peavey bandit 112
fender champion 100(think this one is dialog tho, and i prefer analog)
i have also thought of buying a orange micro terror and some cheap cab, but i doubt the result will be worth the money... :yeah:
so i am open for options and amps and gear!

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

This would be easy if you were in America. I don't know about Norway. But Peavey Windsor, (100-watt tube amp), tends to sell for less than your budget. I snagged mine, brand new, for less than your budget.

I'd sell you mine, but I imagine the shipping would be killer. ;)

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

haha yeah, would be A LOT easier, would love to buy, but yeah, unfortunately i bet the shipping would destroy the price range completely...

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

This might be one situation where I could recommend a modelling amp, like a Fender Cyber-Twin, Peavey Vyper, or one of the offerings from Boss; and there are others. The Bandit is a pretty darn good amp. Some of Marshall's solid-state amps can sound decent. I think the little Orange amp might not have enough power for you.

I just don't know that European market at all, but hopefully you can get some advice from some of the other members that do. Play as many amps as you can find.

Good luck!

Bill

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

If you can find a Peavey Bandit 112S, it'll do the trick.

Sometimes I wish I'd kept mine.

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

The Bandit is definitely a solid amp for the price. I used one for jamming for a while.

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

a peavey bandit was my first amp and it was loud and reliable. the tone was ok, not great, but plenty good enough to get me thru loads of gigs

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

yea OP mentioned the Bandit

when you mentioned 80 watts and solid state
that was what came to my mind

if you have a track on one
that is your amp

they sound great
not real heavy
plenty loud
add pedals for the Brutalz

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

BAndit is NEVER the wrong answer for "gig" and "Combo"

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

Alright guys, looks like im going for the Bandit! i try not to use too much gain so i can actually hear what i play, so wont be much brutal gain overload because its kinda pointless IMO, so if it gets me through my gigs, ill go for it! thanks for your help guys, your opinions really helped me decide.

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

Yeah Bandit with a dirt pedal or two in front will do it for you.

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

The Roland Cube 60 can do all the stuff the Bandit can, has just as much power (60 watts that go up to 80 with an external cabinet) and it's much lighter to carry around.
You wouldn't make a mistake with either a Bandit or a Cube 60.

Were those modeling Vox amps any good for heavy sounds? A friend of mine had a VT120 and I thought the high-gain models sounded like crap.

EDIT: Forgot an old gem: PEAVEY RENOWN.
Sometimes they go for real cheap and they have TONS of volume and a great clean tone.
With a decent dirt pedal in front it should smoke both the Cube and the Bandit.
It's one heavy bastard to lug around though. And it's going to be at least 20 years old...

I didn't think of a Cube. I'm not sure what they run over there, but I'd take a Cube over a Bandit pretty much any day.

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

I wonder if any old Sunn Beta Leads ever show up over there?

I had a 70s one (2x12 combo) back in the mid 80s. Wish I still had it. It was a brute - pant-crapping volume and pretty cool overdrive sound.

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

Diego - I am a Cube fan, and I know of your love of your 60. But A Cube 60 vs a Bandit? For the working man? I'll take the bandit every time. And two shows on Friday

I don't know man. The Cube is lighter, does brutal stuff just as good, has plenty of bass for a 1x12, has a cab-simulated line out for a PA, and has decent FX on board.
I think it's just as good to be honest. I was the working man for a while, never had to put the Cube past half.

Whatever he gets the sweetest deal on, he's going to be more than fine.

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

Well, i have a much better deal on the bandit and I can order it right from the site of my local music store, and the cube I think costs a bit more and is harder to get. And no I have not seen any sunn leads up here. Since the Bandit is so cheap(wonder why...) I will have the chance to buy one pedal with it and with time I bet I'm going to buy a extension cab as well. Do i need to buy a peavey extension cab, or just any cab i would like to use(thinking of wattage and speakers)?

Re: The quest of a gigworthy combo!!

Peavey Bandit 112 is a winner in my book. I've played mine with several bands and its tone and volume kept up just fine. Best part was, mine is used, made in the USA and cost $100. And IF I decided I don't like the tone, I can use a multi-effects pedal in the preamp to redefine the tone to anything I like. The Bandit is very loud and is usable for many situations.
