The sh-5 Custom and the Custom 8

Re: The sh-5 Custom and the Custom 8

Myself, I've never understood why some feel the need to change the SH-5.

It is one of my all-time faves and so good that after I bought a new one and tried it, I grabbed a vintage one off of ebay years ago.

I play through a Marshall which I modded to '68 plexi specs, a '66 Fender Deluxe, Rockman, ADA MP-1, BIAS, etc.

Never had any problems with the top end of the pickup; it's perfect.

And it gets chimey with the guitar volume knob down; no harshness whatsoever.

With a distorted amp it gets a lovely thick crunch, great sustain, and tightness in the low end.

Like someone said, tracks very well for speedy runs.

To me, it is in the same ballpark tone-wise as the DiM Super Distortion... but more open.

They call it a "PAF on steroids", and that is probably the best descriptor for this pickup I've ever come across.

I feel you man, ive had a Custom loaded in my SG for about 10 days now and i love it, i look forward to playing it everyday and i dont put the guitar down till it hurts, but, aren't you just a bit curious? An inexpensive and easy mod that is easily reversed...seems like a win-win situation

Re: The sh-5 Custom and the Custom 8

Nah; once I find something that works great, I don't **** with it.

If I need variety, I get something else.

I am the same way. If I really like something, I keep it as is.

Re: The sh-5 Custom and the Custom 8

The most important factor to me is how the low-end tracks.
I really like to be on the border-line between crisp/fast lows, and lows that have some depth, bloom and dare I say just a hint of mush.
Recording you can just blend tracks that highlight each element, but trying to get a balance from one guitar in-the-room requires the right pickup/magnet for the specific guitar/rig.

Re: The sh-5 Custom and the Custom 8

I replaced the Custom with a Nazgul (my SG)
Because the Custom is going into my new Les Paul build...i figure if i love it in the SG it should be just as good or better in the Les Paul....im not going to mod the Custom...its awesome as is

Re: The sh-5 Custom and the Custom 8

I'd be looking for something to take me the other direction!
How about the custom with double thick ceramic aka the big Custom? Or I have heard of a Custom made for Dean Zelinski guitars that had triple ceramics like the Invader. MastaC used to have some for sale in the Trading Post.

Ha! This is why i love the FORUM, learn about some tweaked hybrids every time...curiosity killed the cat...satisfaction brought him back.
Its the tweakers/modifiers that are the innovaters....so, the BIG Custom eh? What kind of tone profile would that monster demonstrate?

Re: The sh-5 Custom and the Custom 8

Every time I put a thick ceramic in something, it makes for bigger tighter lows and dramatic highs.

Re: The sh-5 Custom and the Custom 8

So, that would be more scooped than the production Custom....i gotta have my mids

Re: The sh-5 Custom and the Custom 8

I don't know as it would have less mids. It's not like putting an A5 in there. But then maybe it would seem like that.

Im quickly falling in love with Custom Culture.
The standard products are Amazing and the Mods are super intriguing.... Have you heard (of)
Any magnet swaps with this forum's brainchild...the amazing 59'/Custom Hybrid?

Re: The sh-5 Custom and the Custom 8

I just put a SH-5 custom in my SG. Man I love that thing. I can play anything from Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd to Metallica and Pantera. It's very versatile.
