Ever jammed with someone who has absolutely no concept of tone?

Now, I deal with SS amp all the time and in my opinion, i feel they work.....so long as you work around their deficiencies!!


I jammed the other day with a dude who brought in a peavey transtube studio pro. Not too bad for a SS...but when he plugged in, he started playing bassy speed metal using a HOLLOW BODY with a NECK pickup....But the worst part about it was he placed his REVERB at 75% AAAHHHHH!! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT! I honestly could not make out a single note he played.


So lets discuss,

Name 1 thing that in your opinion should NEVER BE DONE

i had the opposite effect on fellow jammers with my SS Fender Ultimate Chorus last Sunday... the Drummer and the other guitarist are trying to find a used Ultimate Chorus now.. ha ha ha ha :) The guy who wants a Fender like mine said that "i guess i'll have to buy a good strat like yours to go with the amp".... he sh*t when i said it was just a POS MIM Strat i picked up for $200 and added a used $50 humbucker to... They loved the stock MIM ceremic Single Coils on the clean channel

It's odd.... with a lot of my various rigs-(tube and SS) i get people saying, oh i love that sound, that rig sounds great, man that amp kicks butt... even had bouncers at one club ask if they could try my 5150 out after a gig... anyways no one ever says i love your playing.. it's i love your sound.. strange but true.. Better gear then skill i guess....


When it comes to gear i'll pretty much try anything.... cheap stuff, expensive stuff.... tweek the hell out of it.... So i don't think i'd have any rules about what not to use or try

Hahaha!Many drummers have a better "ear" than the guitar players ,since most drummers are more musicians in nature,Not a chick hunter with a six string instrument ,or somebody who wants to be cool!:bigok:

never let non-contributing people be in the jam space during writing mode.

my old band's bassist would bring his kids and girlfriend into the studio during writing, and next thing you know, his 10 year-old kid and his girlfriend would chime in with how they think things should sound, and start shooting down band members' good ideas. the vibe was totally lost, and it's not easy to tell your buddy's girlfriend to shut up and get out.

That's probably true, the drummer in my band always tells me when something sounds like crap, and I listen (except when at least 3 other people tell me differently).

i think putting a pod in front of a good tube amp is pretty stupid. if its a ****ty tube amp with ****ty distortion, thats cool, but it just proves how many people buy tube amps, just to say they have one.

i also know a guy who has a flextone III and puts a POD in front of it. i didnt want to tell him how stupid i thought that was.

Spandex.... OMG...... NEVER AGAIN!!!!

But seriously, using band practice to learn your parts is a big issue with me. After showing the band the chart/ or the progressions I think band practice is designed for improving tightness, dynamics, starts, endings, transitions parts etc... in short.. to improve the ensemble on a whole. Not to teach, and reteach the lazy weak links their bloody parts..

People who buy high wattage tube amps and never turn the master volume past 2 completely mystify me. If you're not going to make the power section work, why get a tube amp at all? A solid state amp and a good pedal would accomplish the same thing for 1/4 the cost.

I have nothing against tube amps in general, but I do want to slap the people who buy them just so they can say they have one. I have the utmost respect for people who gig with 18 watt class A combos, and they usually have the nicest tone too.

I hate it when people scoop their mids. Anything below 5 just sounds stupid.

Also sounds stupid when people cut their highs.


I also dislike any tunings below drop D. I have the "If you want to play a bass, buy a bass" mentality.

Wanna be tough guys who smash good gear for no reason.

I saw a band on SNL recently (forgot who) and they smashed their gear at the end of their set. It just seemed so unnecessary and cliche. If I recall correctly, it was at the end of thier EMO ballad.

Look on the bright side . . . maybe it means that they've given up music?

Never ever use too much Solid State distortion / gain.

I used to (didn't know any better) and I bet all my old live performances sucked for the audience, especially in front of my big amp.

Even my recordings as recent as a year ago sound awful.

The thing that confounds me is the one guy that shows up with 100 watt heads and 4 x 12 cabs and proceed to crank them up to where they sound good...and they do sound good....and proceed to swamp everyone else....including the drummer and the PA.

Then the excuse..."It only sounds good when I play it this loud!"

Well, of course it does....but when have you been in a situation where you have EVER needed it to be that loud? When have you ever played a gig that you needed THAT much push from your amp and NOT had the benefit of a PA to carry you if need be?

Things go about forty-five minutes usually and then it's the bass players job to come up with an excuse to end early and then everyone else can follow suit.

Good work Johnny Buzzkill....

....and your penance is having to carry your own gear out to your stupid car.

Never let people borrow your guitars. If a string breaks and buddy doesn't have a back up that's one thing, but on a regular basis, that's a no no.

Do NOT have Reverb and delay both at 50% and both on at the same time!

Nope it isn't easy and it isn't pretty so that's why you kick his ass immediately when either the girl or the kid say anything.

I remember a bass player telling me once that the ultimate heavy metal rhythm tone was the neck pickup on a guitar and a boss metal zone.
