The Triangle! (Shape of single coils vs. openings)

Hey, Gang,

I'm thinking of picking up an H/S/S Ibanez, in which I will install a Full Shred bridge, and two Alnico II Pro single coils (RW/RP in the neck). The guitar I'm thinking of has small openings for the single coils, and the APS-2s have small "triangles" of plastic below the coil, where the wires mount. I know on a Strat that's not a problem, since the excess material would be hidden by the pickguard. But do these things cause problems if you're trying to install them into this kind of guitar? Or do they just slide sideways underneath?

Thanks,
Michael (heymcz)

afaik, they do not slide underneath the slot. judging from the picture, it should fit a standard single.

Re: The Triangle! (Shape of single coils vs. openings)

In some guitars it can be necessary to modify the baseplate, or even completely remove the "tab". In these cases, just carefully file or Dremel the material off , taking care not to damage the hookup leads...

Zerb & Dani, cool, thanks for the info! If it's possible to modify the tab I'm sure my tech will figure it out. I pickup up the guitar this afternoon. See below! I ended up getting the red higher-end (but still midrange) SAS36FM model.

This may not interest you at all, but the chrome single coil pickup rings from Stewart McDonald would dress up the middle and neck pickups on that guitar IMHO:

Might also save the day in case your tech needs to ever-so-slightly enlarge the pickup routes to get those pups to fit.

Just an idea,

Chip

Kind of off topic, but I don't like the look of those triangles at all, they just look tacky to me. On topic, I think guitars are designed for those, meaning the tabs don't slide under the top. Like Zerb said just file some of the material off. Good luck!

Cool, those are awesome! I'm seriously thinking about them. Do you have any contact info or where to purchase them? Thanks, Michael

Off topic, yesterday in a book shop I saw a music book for a triangle (the percussive instrument). I thought it was funny. It was really small, and for kids.

The last two ssl-5's I have gotten don't have a traingular lip but instead are rectangular with rounded ends. Maybe you could custom order ssl-2's with that baseplate instead?

Re: The Triangle! (Shape of single coils vs. openings)

I made a couple of no-tab singles for a guy once. Just cut the tab off as Zerb says, but it's a lot easier when you're building the pickup from the ground up.

Since there's no longer a place on the side of the pickup to put the leads, you have put the holes and eyelets on the ends of the bobbin, just inside the mounting screw holes.

I'm sure MJ could easily make something like that.

I´m fairly certain that this would be available for no or minimal upcharge as a Shop Floor Custom ;)

That's what I was thinking.

Thanks, everyone for the input. I'm putting a Quarter Pound Flat (RWRP) for Strat in the neck, and probably an Alnico II Pro single in the middle; I know the output will be different, but I'll probably just use the Alnico II to blend with the Full Shred bridge and QPS neck. Or just leave it on for a whole song by itself.

I just ordered the EVH (pre-sale) so I'm kinda tapped out as far as custom shop funding goes...there just may have to be some chopping going on.
