The trick to a Big Muff Pi?

Can someone point me towards some settings? So many guitar sounds I like have supposedly been accomplished with this pedal, yet every time I try to use one (or, at the moment, the emulation of one that came with the TonePort software) it tends to sound too thick and muffled. Or, if I back off on the gain, I can get a thinner sound, but it seems to lose all note definition to the point that different chords are almost indistiguishable from each other. Clearly, there's something I'm just not getting.

I'm aiming for something along the lines of The Raveonettes, Apples in Stereo, or on the slightly more rocking side, Pixies or Gish-era Smashing Pumpkins.

Crank yer amp quite a bit & get the power tubes cooking, then add a liberal dose of the Muff.

Also, they like to have a Wah in font of them and a graphic EQ after them.

Thanks, guys. The wah, in particular, definitely made a huge difference. I think that was a big part of what I WASN'T hearing.
