Is there a prettier sounding mod on a blackface? Discuss.

Oh yeah, Evan, your California channel has the Deep Switch as of last night. :nana:

Is this a cathode cap you switch in and out Scott?

Re: The *umble Deep Switch

You take the DPDT bright switch, add a cap and three resistors and run them to various spots on the bass, mid and treble pots. ;) It just fattens and sweetens up the tone beyond what I was expecting. My old Two Rock had a similar switch on it.

I see....

I'm not familiar with this switch. What's it do? Sounds like a treble shelving filter. Am I close?

I have to look at my Fender scematics, but I remember the BF Bassmans having a switch that added a .1 cap or removed it....I think it was called a deep switch also?

Re: The *umble Deep Switch

Hmm... it has an effect on the amp that sucked me in last night. I've got the bright cap 120pf hard wired, no longer on a switch. But that might change when I get back in town. I wired the DPDT bright switch with 1 cap and 3 resistors. It has a way of just opening up the amp and giving it this 3D quality. Blew me away. I just sat there playing an Asus, then barring it up and down the neck, chording and fingerpicking. I literally sat there rather mesmerized for about 45 minutes or so. I'm digging it a lot. I will try it with a few other values on the bright cap. Funny thing, in deep mode, it drops the gain of the preamp a bit, giving up more clean headroom which was another of our goals.

My old bass player had a silverface bassman and it did indeed have a "deep" switch. It gave that amp a lot of girth.

oooohhh that does sound utopian!?!?!?

Re: The *umble Deep Switch

I went and pulled up an old silverface bassman schematic with the deep switch. This mod that I'm talking about is more involved than adding one cap.

Scott's mod is more involved though if he's using a few resistors to make the changes...
