Good ol' Yellowknife

Love:
-Unparalleled access to the outdoors ... real outdoors (no cellphone towers, drinking your water from the lakes, no pollution clouds, run into all sorts of wildlife.
- 24 hour daylight over the summer which is awesome
- Best fresh water fishing in the world
- Friendly community. We stop and talk with one another in the street, fairly low crime, good sense of belonging

Hate
- The winter, lasts 7-8 months most of which I wake up in darkness and go home in darkness as sunrise is around 10:30 am and sunset is around 3:30.
- Accessibility: There's only two ways out, 1: a highway to Edmonton which is 1,600 km's away, or 2: a 2 hour flight on a 737 to Edmonton

It's a Japanese family crest known as a Mon. My primary love is art (painting, graphic design, getting into carving) I came across it in a reference book and thought it was one of the coolest looking designs out there, so I made it my avatar. It turned pink for some trend that was going on for GJ for some reason I've forgotten.

I've thought about changing it over the last little while but everything I've come up with just doesn't feel right.

I know you've been on this forum for a while even on the old one I think. (the dab green one ) How did you stumble upon this place?

Currently I'm a Policy Analyst for a Crown Corporation. My family moved up here a couple of years after immigrating to Canada from Scotland as there was work up here.

The Prophet thing comes from the NFL season when the Buccs became champions, I sort of did a shtick about receiving heavenly messages predicting the winners of the game and posted them before kickoff and IIRC I had 100% accuracy, so I changed my name to TheProphet.

The summer of 2001 or 2002 I decided to build a guitar from scratch (as much as possible), and had questions about pickups and had been using Duncan's for a few years. So was on the main website and found the forum so I joined to ask a few questions and well the community here is pretty addictive.

I have an interesting sense of humour and it tickled my funny bone. The mental picture of a manatee swimming in a cup of coffee made me chuckle pretty hard.

I am also incredibly lazy about changing anything in my sig.

Yeah Seasonal Affective Disorder does set in.

My accent is gone save for a few words where I pronouce things a little different compared to most Canadians, but I can muster a hybrid that's a cross of Edinburgh and Glaswegian.

The Kilt gets worn at weddings and other special occasions. I need a new one now that I think about it.

With a Winter that lasts that long, do you ever worry about how your gear is affected? Also, how do you even OBTAIN gear?

How does the season affect instruments?

If you use common sense, not much.

The key is to never leave an instrument in an area that’s not temperature controlled for too long (that goes for extreme heat as well as cold). However if you do leave it in the cold there are a couple of things

1. Strings really don’t like the cold or massive changes in ambient temperatures. Leaving them in the cold also kills their life and durability. In other words, you’ll have dead strings that break often.

2. Set necks really don’t like being in -40. A friend opened in case after the guitar had been sitting in the car’s trunk all day and got to watch as the neck just snapped right out of the tenon.

3. Finishes will crack if you leave a guitar out too long, and not in a nice relic or finish checking kind of way.

4. Tube amps don’t like having extremely cold bottles, so if you’re playing an outdoors gig during the winter you need warm blankets and a heated fan blowing on the amp.

As for buying gear up here, there is one store that serves the entire NWT and Nunavut. I like the place and try and buy through them as much as possible, but it doesn’t make much sense as they rarely go below MSRP and often prices are more than that as they tack on “freight costs”. They also don’t have a wide selection of stock.

So there are two more realistic options, one is to buy stuff online through places like MF and ebay. Number two is to buy gear when you go down to Edmonton and Calgary. It’s not uncommon when people know you’re heading south for your friends and family to give you shopping lists or for you to go around asking people if they need anything from down south.

- Geologically: Iceland
- Snake wise: Costa Rica
- Police wise: Italy
- Realistically: The wilderness up here. Bears, wolves, moose, wolverines and whiteouts at -40 ... all can kill if you're not prepared.

A dude? You of course. A warning, I have to be wined and dined before letting you get to first base though.

Not a colour, but black seems to be the overall winner. For actual colour it'd be green.

Pizza: Homemade sauce, Peppercorn Salami, Back Bacon, White onion, Green pepper, Provalone, and grana padano.
