The "Whipple" Wah Inductor

I've been using this inductor now in both my Vox 847 wah and a 1971 Thomas Organ CryBaby....Both wahs have the BC109Bs in place....One thing I've found with this inductor,is that it makes both wahs darker sounding and bass heavier...Both wahs are very vocal, but I see I'm going to have to mess a bit with a trimmer pot for the midrange...I'm currently using the popular 2.2k mid resistor but I may find 1.5k or less than 2k may be better...The wahs sound great and are vocal, but they don't cut right in the highs for me...I have already adjusted the gear on the pot and I need to tweak the board a bit...

If you have an overly spikey wah,the whipple is a great inductor probably for an otherwise stock wah...If you've modded your wah for more gain, more mids, and more lows, this inductor will darken up your wah quite a bit....

In my Vox wah I may actually go back to the "03" Stack O Dimes..This proves that the inductor does make a difference in the circuit.

Re: The "Whipple" Wah Inductor

I was actually just about to post a thread on these too see if anyone had any experience with these.

I have a V847 and I was trying to think of ways to upgrade it a bit. Would you recommend the Whipple for high gain use? or would it get lost easier because of the dark quality you mentioned?

If you are going to try the whipple inductor,I recommend trying it in the stock wah first....If you are converting over to a dpdt switch for true bypass, you then can drop the input resistor from 68k to either 56k or no lower than 47k for unity gain....If you mod your wah for more mids, more gain, and more overall lows, the whipple inductor is definately going to darken up your wah alot..Any mod(s) you do,you need to see how the wah sounds after each individual mod before moving onto the next mod..

I don't like the stock MPSA18 trannies in the 847 and I always change out to BC109Bs or early 5117 Thomas organ crybaby trannies..The MPSA18s are pretty high gain trannies and I prefer lower gain transistors in my wahs..If you're worried about gain, you might want to consider lower gain transistors then?

I think I added a resistor between the hot and ground on the input to stop the popping noise from switching it on, using true bypass, but I don't think I changed the input resistor. I'll have to double check that.

So if I haven't modded my wah for more mids/lows, it won't make it darker?
I'll have to check out those BC109Bs and I have a quick question about the inductor:

Is there a way to screw up installing it? like there is 4 solder points, does it matter what direction it goes in, or do I have to make sure I have it turned a certain way to make it work?

I always add a 1meg resistor so the switches don't pop also....Depending on what inductor you use,yes it does matter what pins go to the board...The Whipple uses pins 1 and 8 or it won't work...

You'll have to use your ears as far as voicing your wah...As I said, just do one change at a time and see if you like it...If you do more than one change and you don't like it,which change was it that you didn't like?

If you go with the whipple inductor, more than likely you'll prefer the stock 1.5k mid set resistor or there abouts(The 2.2k makes the wah too woofy for my tastes)...This inductor seems to add more overall gain into the circuit, adds lows, and creates a darker circuit wah overall..

As you boost or gain up the wah and add lows etc...you start losing wah clarity and you lose alot of the cutting toe down quacky tone that I Love about the very early vintage Vox and Crybaby wahs..The toe down highs aren't harsh, but they need to cut through right..

Re: The "Whipple" Wah Inductor

Today I switched out and listened to a TDK 5103 inductor, the Whipple,an "03" Stack Of Dimes, and an Arteffect inductor....I Liked the Whipple the best...It darkens the wah up a bit(but I tweaked that issue out)and this inductor creates the most vocalness sweep..Second was a tie between the Stack of dimes and the arteffect inductor...In this Vox wah,the TDK was my least favorite, but this inductor sounds really good in my Thomas Organ CB wah...The inductor does change the voicing of the wah,but so does the other component values, tolerence and type of components used...The sound of the wah is from the total package and not just 1 component.

Re: The "Whipple" Wah Inductor

I still like the Fulltone inductor the best, but I don't currently own anymore and he doesn't retail sell them anymore..

The whipple is a great inductor and priced right for most of us...The Arteffect inductor is like $10 more and it's not as good...Ripoff really!
