Then there were 2.

Found a 2001 58 Reissue on Reverb that seemed to be in need of a good home. Quite a bit warmer than the 59 reissue I bought last month. She makes her debut tomorrow morning.

Re: Then there were 2.

I dig the R8 more. I am biased since I have one myself. That seems like a great pair (that's what she said). Let us know how it plays in the morning.

Thank you. I dig them both for what they are. I like the color a bit better on the R8. And honestly I wish the R9 was the Teaburst color.

Re: Then there were 2.

Just goes to show - any two LP's can vary quite a bit - even constructed that similarly.

They are identical in weight as well. This one is 8 lbs and 10 oz, the R9 is 8.6 Lbs so very little difference in weight. This has 57 Classics in it.

Re: Then there were 2.

That is a pair of "Aces" if I must say so myself....

I would toss a pair of Seth's in one, and a PG/Whole Lotta in the other.

I appreciate the pickup suggestions. I have already made up my mind that the 57 classics are coming out. I have a couple sets of Bare Knuckles on hand ( Mules and Stormy Mondays), so I am wanting to try those and see what we get. I have thought of PG's in the R8. I have tried them in couple of other guitars and they are a neat sounding pickup.

Re: Then there were 2.

Great looking guitar and the maple flamed top looks gorgeous! How do you find the neck thickness compared to the R9? I heard R8's have really thick necks on them like baseball bats.

I have heard that too. The neck on this is actually a little thinner than the R9, which I don't think is typical. The R9 is chunky but comfortable.

She did fantastic this morning. I was concerned that it might be too warm but it sounded great. Granted, I didn't end up using any gain but the little bit that I had it through some distortion it didn't sound like it would get buried in the mix so I think we are good in that department I ended up using the middle position on the selector switch the whole time. The guy who plays acoustic didn't make it today so I ended up doing more of what he would do and the bridge and neck pickup combined was perfect for that. I would have normally used my Strat for the particular songs we did this morning but I really wanted to give the R8 a go.

I am going to change out the pickups as I have a set of BKP's that I think will really compliment the base tone of this guitar. If by some chance the distorted tone is too warm, I will simply swap out the stock bridge posts for a set of steel ones (i think the stock ones are Brass) and that will likely solve any issues like that.

Re: Then there were 2.

My R8 is 8.8 lbs and has a low mid girth with a sweet top end. The Burstbuckers were okay, but I put Wizz LTDs in it and she opened up nicely. I say go for the pickup swap for sure. You'll get the most out of her with an upgrade.

Edit: My R8 sits at .925" at the 1st. She's fuller than my '60 Melody Maker which essentially has a burst neck. The RI's can vary.

I have heard good things about Wizz pickups. I am cindering a set of Sheptone Blue sy or Tribute 4's. Both sets have alnico 4 magnets. As does the BKP Mule set that I have that I am going to try in the R8. I am thinking of doing the Peter Green mod but, I want to see if I can get more volume out of it with a Resistor added to the wring. It might be wise for me to have it to done via switching rather than rotating the magnet of the neck pickup. The way you describe the tone of your R8 is pretty much on parr with how mine sounds. Definitely has that classic tonality that one associates with old Les Pauls.

I know one thing, I am very glad to have finally moved up to instruments of this quality. There really is quite a difference in the quality of woods used in these guitars (more than I expected). I just think it sucks, the money one has to shell out for the best woods. I know part of it is the fact that it's a Custom Shop instrument. I would be willing to bet that the PRS Private stock instruments are of the same quality of wood as these and with an even higher starting price.

What year is your R8?

Re: Then there were 2.

Mine is a 2014 Made to Measure R8. Low serial number, 19th guitar made that year. MF ordered them to be transitional '58 spec. That's why mine is rocking a flame top. I agree on the pricing too. It took me about 3-4 years of flipping gear to finally get an R8 or similar CS guitar. You get your money's worth tho. I picked her up for the first time in awhile and I forgot how good she sounds/plays.

Re: Then there were 2.

I like it! Congrats!

Btw, the neck on my R9 is bigger than my R8. I enjoy the R8, but the R9 is too big for me and I'm putting it up for sale. It was a rescue dog, and I put a lot into restoring it, but I just never bonded with it because of the neck.

But I have two of the Guitar Center Custom Shop 1960 Tobaccobursts. Those have incredible necks.
