i need a fat distortion sound like thrice or finch. i have a rg-220 ibanez. i just need it for my neck pickup. any suggestions.

Re: thick distortion

personally, my choice would be a custom custom. from clips ive heard on this (not the tone zone thing, from board members), it sounds thick and chunky and amazing.

Re: thick distortion

If you want thick distortion for the bridge, Go for the SD Custom Custom or the Dimarzio Breed. You want it for the neck i see, The alnico II pro neck or the Dimarzio Breed neck.

Re: thick distortion

ya cool thanks but do all neck pick ups tend to sound more bassier? cuase my standard ones do. but n e ways is the custom have good clean also or is it to bassy?

well actually bridge pickups are made bassier to compensate for the tonal loss for strings near the bridge (hence lesser vibrations of the strings)
so the tone at the neck always seems thicker and rounder.

as for thick pups for the neck, the a2ph and the breed neck and the air norton should work for u at the neck.

Re: thick distortion

DM Air Norton. Pretty thick in the neck.
CC is for bridge IMHO. It is thick but not chunky to my ears.

Re: thick distortion

In the video where the one guitarist shows his equipment he just tell something about the bridge pub's which are a Super Distortion and a JB. I think they're not playing the neck often. Thursday play JB in bridge and i've heard in the neck too, but i'm not sure about this all. Finch has a very processed guitar tone imo with very much guitar tracks i think. But they lay all "fatter" guitars.

This thick distortion is more an issue of the amp and procession (right word?).

If you have a bridge pub you like ou maybe should tell us what it is and the guys here can tell you which balances well with your bridge pub!

Re: thick distortion

The 'screamo' tone:

High gain tube amp + Les Paul or SG with aftermarket pickups = Fat Distortion.

All those bands have pretty top notch equipment, if I were you I'd start with saving up for a good (tube)amp. If you already have a good amp I'd suggest a guitar without a trem to get a chunkier/fatter tone. I feel that my Ibanez sounds trebly even with duncans in it, it sounds amazing with the JB but is lacking in the oomph/chunk departement.

I don't know what you have in the bridge but I'd suggest a DDn, that one has fat distortion for in the neck position, it's quite hot so you would want something hot in the bridge as well to keep it from overpowering.

More specifically, mid-70's Gibsons...at least in the case of Thrice.

In general a lot of bands with that kind of sound all play on Gibby's and ESP's through any kind of high gain amp (most of the time a TSL or Recto). Most of them use Duncans too...and Super Distortions in the case of Thrice.

Re: thick distortion

A 59 will do you nicely. Balls, smoothness, aggression, sustain, and most importantly, a strong singing voice.

Re: thick distortion

More JCM 800, JCM 900 Recto or Bogner I would say when i think of thrice or thursday

Re: thick distortion

I definately believe that type of distortion has 80% to do with your amp and 20% (or less) to do with your pups. Any of the suggestions here are good, but I'd save for a good high gain amp if that's what you're looking for.

i have a 59 in the neck so i guess a am looking for a pick up that will go good with (using both pick ups at a time) and give a good clean and distortion and yes i have a good tube amp

Re: thick distortion

Try getting a Gibson 498 Hot Alnico and replace the alnico 5 magnet with a ceramic. I did this and it was the thickest, fullest sounding p-up I have ever heard. The best part was it has clarity.

Re: thick distortion

i would post this in the dimarzio fourm but it looks to crowded. ne ways i found a pick up called humbucker from hell (yes its dimarzo) . it looks to be exactly what i want (a non bassy neck pick up for good hard crunchy distortion) would this be a good choice to complement my '59 in the bridge? and would it give me that thrice used thrusday screamo sound?

thanx guys & girls 2
