I made a setup on a Slash Epi the other night....it had APH-1s...and got that for real LP tone, fat neck, and warm bridge with a good pleasent bite...not a harsh tone anywhere, was making a new bone nut for it and dressed the frets....I almost wanted it...and everybody and their mother here knows I do not dig LPs

I'd wouldn't mess with the finish. I doubt that will cure your problems.

I would try SD or Gibson pups with Alnico 2 magnets with 500k pots

or a new guitar altogether.
