Thin sounding JB with 18.5 DC resistence.Question

I have 4 JB's that have come out of various guitars, 2 real ones and 2 Duncan Designed ones. The 2 DD and one of the real ones all measure 16.0ohms to 16.1ohms but the last real JB reads 18.5ohms and it sounded thin???? Not sure, as it just sounded different than any other JB I've ever played through. Is there something wrong with it or what? Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Thin sounding JB with 18.5 DC resistence.Question

The coils may be interconnected wrongly. This will not affect the series DC resistance reading but will cancel out a whole bunch of frequencies.

If the output cable is four-conductor + shield, for the correct electrical phase relationship between the coils, the series link should be red to white.

If the series link IS red to white, and the pickup sounds out-of-phase with itself, somebody has been interfering with the connections between the coil start/finishes and the output conductors.

Re: Thin sounding JB with 18.5 DC resistence.Question

If the pickup measures that much the wire is way out of spec. Its not impossible that there was a bad section of wire that is thicker and probably worse it is inconsistent along its length and that is going to effect how it lays

Keep in mind SD's are not wound to resistance they are wound to turn count so this isnt a "hotter JB" this is a out of spec JB. Hotter also doesnt necessarily mean thicker.

It might be nothing but my uber prized early JB measures 14.85 just barely above what a custom should be and its fat as hell.

If one of the coils on your JB has a significantly different resistance, that would make the PU sound brighter and thinner (more treble/less mids as the coils wouldn't be cancelling as much of each other). Higher resistance = warmer, but that's if the coils are coils are reasonably balanced.

Sorry but you have a serious lack of understanding of the interaction you are trying to describe with this statement here.

Its simple a mismatch itself will not and cannot create highs that were not already inherent in a coil alone.

Lets take it like this say we have a 100% within spec JB. 2 coils that measure perfectly 8.3k With this set up you will have Y amount of highs

If you take one of the coils and add extra turns to it and you do not change the wind pattern nor tensions enough that the coil now measures 10.2 (which would be impossible the bobbins could not fit this amount wire onto it) you would now have 1 coil that is a good bit darker than your 8.3k coil. Together these 2 coils would be darker than a pair of 8.3 coils. Not as dark as 2x10.2 coils but still far darker than a pair of 8.3's

If you were to split the pickup to the 8.3 coil whether it is complete or partially it will never be brighter than the 8.3 coil on its own. In this scenario where he is comparing an out of spec JB to an in spec one your explanation makes zero sense.

But this situation is highly implausible. As I said before that much wire would not fit on normal PAF size bobbins. What we have here is basically a bad section or spool of wire (especially since we can deduce that its an issue with both coils not one). When you have wire that is uneven along its length it is hard to maintain tension and wind pattern. In particular if wire is too thick you wind up with more randomness in the coil and more space cause it isnt stacking evenly. This ball of yarn can cause the pickup to thin out cause basically the wind is fubard.

Thanks for the responses. I don't know what can be done with it other than whatever guitar it ends up in will sound a little different. You guys have a good weekend.
