Think a '59 bridge and PG neck would play nice together?

How do you guys think a '59 bridge / PG neck would sound? I'm sure I'd like the sound of both individually, but I'm not sure how they'd sound together, with the '59 sporting an A5 mag and the PG sporting an A2 mag.

Any thoughts?

I'll be getting a PGn soon. I know the Custom isn't quite the same as the 59, but there are some (surprising) similarities. So I'll let you know.

But I don't think it would be a problem. In fact, I don't know where the notion came from that you can't mix magnets. I've used A2 in neck with A5 in bridge with decent results. I've gone A3 neck and ceramic bridge and been quite happy.

That's the combo I'm using in my Hamer Mirage right now, even with the different magnet material the outputs appear to be very similar and the pearly sound much better (this is just my opinion) than the JB that was in the guitar. The pearly gets all the harmonics it's designed to get and to my ears gets is thicker than the JB. The 59 is smooth and fat - I think they compliment each other very well.

The 59B uses alnico 5 and alnico 5 gives strong, solid bass response and extended highs: perfect for a bridge pickup.

The PGn is an alnico 2 pickup with a little less bass than an alnico 5 59N but has nice extended highs due it's unbalanced coil configuration: perfect for a neck pickup to help keep it from getting muddy.

They should compliment each other very well.

I favor a5 paf clones in the bridge and a3 or a2 in the neck. In the middle, mixing the bright bridge with a deep and full-of-sustain neck produces great results. The only problem could be that you would have to adjust your tone on the amp going from the bridge to the neck. To my experience with SD pickups, that does not happen. But that did happen when I used a 8.70K a5 ant bridge, and rio grande texas in the neck! ;)

Anyway, 59b/pgn is a delicious set!

delicious indeed!

i dont think you should have to adjust the tone much with those two, ive used that combo before and they balance pretty well

Wow... I'll have to give 'em a try. Originally, I had planned on putting a Seth/CC combo, but those are on order for 4 weeks (double cream). Of course.. that means when the seth and CC get here, I'll have to get another guitar for the PG/'59 :laugh2: :smack:

It never ends.

Re: Think a '59 bridge and PG neck would play nice together?

the outputs and also the tone should balance each other out well, that's the combo that's used in a Fender Showmaster HH... it might be the other way around (pg/59) but I think that's right

I'd go with a C-5 instead of the 59. Custom 5/PG will likely be the best hum combo you've heard. I think I'm gonna go with Custom 5/Jazz N for all my future setups. I'm using 59 necks now.

I'm using the Custom/PGn combo in my Pauly and think that's a great combination as well. They really balance each other out nicely.
