i am thinking about installing a roller bridge and roller nut to a LP style guitar(music drive revelation) . does anyone have an opinion on whether this will improve tuning stability or not and also what mods will i need to do to the neck to fit the nut?

cheers dave s

Is a roller bridge really necessary? If you are having tuning problems on a non-tremolo LP style guitar you probably need to have a new nut cut, however, I would look into graphite/graphtech before I went to a roller nut which IMO would probably effect the tone much more drastically...

OK i have some questions...

is the roller nut you are talking about the same as the LSR type found on Fender Deluxe strats??? if not what nut?

if it is an LSR i have to wonder a few issues...

one the LSR is a set radius nut i believe... it's set for 9.5 i think

2 for an LSR they have to remove some wood infront of the stock nut's postition and reversing the mod will be interesting...

3 would an LSR nut work on a gibson copies headstock that pulls the strings to the sides unlike a fender that is stright to the tuner?

4 would such a guitar be worth modding the heck out of it?

Dave the most likely culprits for tuning stability issues on a fixed bridge guitar are: a) improper stringing, and / or b) string binding at the nut. Have a good tech cut & install a new nut made of graphite or slip-stone and then invest in some locking machines. That'll likely get you a lot farther than a roller nut & saddles.

I've had guitars with both roller nuts and roller saddles and IMHO you'll pay a price in tone & sustain for using them. They do work but like everything else it's a tradeoff, nothing comes for free. Don't get me wrong, they do work but I just think they're more useful in a vintage tremolo application rather than a fixed bridge setup. Also be wary of roller nuts if you use heavier guage strings, IIRC the LSRs won't take anything larger than a set if 9s (maybe 10s, it's been a while).

As far as hardware goes the LSR nuts are quality items and the best bridge I've had that featured roller saddles was made by ABM.
