thinking about swapping jb with 59

basically the description of the 59 describes what i want tone wise before my amp. however, do you think it would be a good idea to put a 59 in the bridge of my epi lp standard when i play mostly experimental metal ? i play through a digitech preamp, so there shouldnt be a problem getting enough gain even with a low output pu right? anyways, anyone advise against using the 59 for a heavily distorted tone ? i play with distortion 85% of the time and i want my sound to be fat, warm, rich and tight with clarity and a slight crunch. so, please point me in the right direction if you dont think the 59 will do the trick.

The 59 is a very good pickup for a preamp with heavy distortion. It is very articulate and that helps to cut down the mush and irritating overtones that you can get with high output.
I used to play a 59 through a Digitech RP7. I also used a little 59 and they both sounded great.

I played JB's for years. I recently switched out the Bridge pickups in my Les Pauls to 59b's. I find I get a more " Balanced " tone with the 59. Not too bright, not too dark, just enough mids, and great harmonics. I really dig the 59B. :)

Dont do it! :yell:

If metal type stuff is what you play normally i wouldnt advise you to get a 59 instead of a JB. I actually got a 59 in the bridge of my first guitar (it was my first duncan too) and i didnt find it fat enough for what i wanted out of it which was hard rock type stuff, so i swapped it out straight away for a JB and ive never looked back :D

IF you want a "PAF"ish tone but a higher output, try the Custom 5 or Custom. More the c-5, the Custom is a bit too hard hitting for some because of the ceramic mag ;)

I agree. I've been using and suggesting the 59B more and more lately. To me, it just sounds more natural and leaves more room in the tone for my own personality to come through. A really hot humbucker (anything over 10K, IMO) defines the tone alot. I like hot humbuckers...they're fun. But lower output humbuckers (10K or less) will still drive the daylights out of your amp (think Clapton with Cream or Eric Johnsons tone when he plays the red 335) leave more room for personal expression I think.
