Thinking of picking up a couple of pedals...

I am planning on picking up an Xotic SP Compressor and a Mooer Ensemble King.

Reviews of the SP seem to be generally positive. I never really use compression in general but want to be able to improve string to string balance or maybe use it for a small boost.

As for the Ensemble King, I haven´t heard much either way, but want a subtle chorus. I already have a flanger for "more". (I also have a Carbon Copy but don´t generally use the modulation button.)
I generally use (modulation) effects fairly subtly.

Anything else I should be comparing with price wise - especially regarding the chorus pedal?

By the way, as an aside, does everyone else have the same experience when clicking on the "More smilies" button?
Once I click on that lose the few smilies that I already had available and have no way to get to the more smilies page...Doesn´t matter if it´s on a phone or a laptop.

Check out the Wampler Ego Mini. You get a few switches the SP doesn’t have. Ensemble King should be good. Alternatively the TC Corona Mini can load a bunch of TonePrints, the Mooer is CE-2 (which is quite nice).

I've been using an SP compressor for more than a year now, and really like it - actually went from a four knob compressor to it. There are dip switches inside that can be set to tweak things exactly the way you want them. I really like the simplicity of only having the two knobs to mess with, and with the blend it's easy to dial up exactly the right amount of compression. There's also plenty of volume on tap, so it works well as a boost.

If you can track down a Digitech Chorus Factory, you'd have every chorus sound out there in one pedal. It does the subtle stuff extremely well.

This one is beautiful, simple and inexpensive

What is your budget for a Chorus pedal?

The Mooer is less than €60 and I wasn´t planning on spending much more.
I´d use it the odd time, but probably not a lot and with the flanger (TC vortex) I can get close-ish to both chorus and phaser, but wanted something a bit more authentic for chorus without wanting to spend a lot. I prefer flanger - albeit generally quite subtle also.

It also has the added advantage of a small footprint.

The compressor is about €100 more, but that will probably get a lot more use.

The Best Chorus pedal I have ever played was the Free The Tone Chorus Pedal. It is not cheap though.

If you could pick up a used Neunaber Inspire, Providence Anodyme, Jam Pedals Waterfall, Diamond pedals Chorus you would have a lot of pedal and a lot of options within those pedals. All great pedals IMO but probably more than you wish to spend. Another option is the Mad Professor Chorus. Good luck in your search!

I have an Ensemble King. I really like it. It is a decent or better CE-2 clone. Use it about 1/3 of the time at rehearsals. There are more subtle Chorus pedals out there, but it does have a Level control, unlike the real deal.

If you want to run analog style syrup, run the level and depth up. run them down and it can be subtle - but still analog styled.

Highly recommended as a pedal. One sound, but a great sound.

Whilst more expensive I recently got a BOSS WAZA dimension C and love it for its more subtle sound. I have other chorus pedals but haven’t used them for several months. I am sure I have seen that someone does a cheaper clone of the Dimension C just can’t remember who?

edit.

found it - it’s a TC 3rd dimension although I haven’t heard one to compare.

I’ve used a bazillion compressors and I currently have a SP on the board. It’s hard to do better for a Ross-type compressor.

I like that the I can have it at a mild setting always on but if I want squish for a particular song I can just flip the switch and it’s great without having to change any other settings.

I think that the best choruses are flangers.

If you're thinking of Moore, I vote e-lady/eleclady! That's what I use for chorus sounds.

Not to hijack the thread, but tell me more about the MXR Chorus. I recently tried the JHS Series 3 chorus and it didn't thrill me, I guess I want more subtle chorus sounds most of the time.

it's a classic bucket brigade CE2 style with EQ controls that control the Chorus effect in the lows and highs specifically and independently -so a great way to remove chorus from your lows and preserve in your highs or vice versa -so basically a BOSS CE2 on steroids in a heavier duty MXR package.

second, it does subtle Chorus very very well - a lot of the level and depth range on the dials is preserved for the "not overwhelming" portion of the spectrum
