Thinking of selling my Budda....

Hey Guys,

I know you probably think im crazy, because i basically just got the whole rig perfected. I got the head and finally got some JJ tubes in it, searched high and low and finally found the matching cab. Along the way spending all my money on the stuff. I am real happy with sounds i can dial in and suprised at its versatility, i can get all kinds of awesome cleans and dirty sounds and even with the gain all the way up it sounds uncompressed and articulate. The problem that is bugging me is that it is really loud and projects real well so everyone can hear it in my house and down the street. When i play gigs it blows peoples face off and i LOVE it, but the bass carries and pisses people off, in many areas people wouldnt mind, but were i live people are constipated idiots and have nothing better to do than complain. I know there are attentuators etc. but that doesnt solve the problem of the cabinet being so efficiant and other cabs ive tried sound good but at high volumes they break up WAY to much and cant handle the low end, higher powered speakers just dont sound as good etc. Ive done a lot, but i think im gunna need to sell the head AND cab and try something else, its just to much hastle and i cant take it anymore.

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

Why not get a power attenuator? Or sell the cabinet and get a smaller one?

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

Do you soundproof the room in which you play? you probably considered that already, but just in case.

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

Get a power attenuator, and a single 12" cab with a greenback or something like that in it, don't sell a good amp, before you know it you'll have to use it live and then you're screwed!

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

Sell it, then buy a Bogner Shiva halfstack for the same or a little more than you paid.
One reason people love these amps is that they sound great at all volume levels, plus the added compression doesn't bust your eardrums like the wide open Budda SD80 does. For the amount you have into your Budda, you could easily cash out and look for something that suits your needs better.

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

If you love the tone of your Budda, you should stick with it.

Tone is important, volume is too, but if you have tone, you'll find out how to bring down the volume.

GJ is right, but that's if you like the Bogner Shiva. I think they're both absolutely fantastic amps, but you may like the voicing on your Budda more. Leave it up to your ears, not the neighbors' ;)

Also, maybe setting up some sort of sound proof room would work for you. It seems a shame that you can't get to blow your amp wide open without complaints. I've never had that problem, and my amp is running at 80w tube like yours is.

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

Besides finding another amp, you could also get an alternate practice rig. I love my main amp, but the reality is that it's useless unless it's at a rehearsal studio or stage. If your amp is too loud for that, it's definitely time to look at other amps.

I really love old P to P 100W Marshalls, but they seem untameable. You sacrifice a little bit of tone with a Master volume amp, but if you play gigs, it's almost necessary.
I got fed up with the tradeoffs, so I went after something that sacrifices nothing.

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

Yes, I agree with GJ...go for the Shiva...or a THD Flexi.

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

I think thats a good idea actually, ive never played one but anything by Bogner has gotta be great. It sounds great live but it pisses people off sometimes because everyone else runs compressed buzzy amps and mine tears there rib cage open! To tell you the truth, the tone is ALL there but the rythmn channel in particular could use a bit of compression, it is truly a wide open sound. Also the only amp ive ever played that has has so much girth on a note AND isnt compressed sounding, i dont know how they do it. Hmmmm... well then, anyone interested in a Budda SD80 II and matching 4x12? Id much rather sell it to one of you guys than go the Ebay road again. :)

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

I was in the same position as you with my JCM800 head and cab.

I found that no matter how quiet I had the Master Volume set, the amp was always too loud for home use. So I found I had to have a smaller amp for use at home and/or smaller gigs.

Thats why I bought my Marshall JTM60 combo (with Master volume) and a 10w Practise amp for the times even the JTM60 is too much :)

If you love the sound of the amp (which it sounds like you do :)) I wouldn't sell it just because 'Other people use buzzy amps' and the neighbours don't like it. I'd buy a smaller amp and use the Budda for gigs etc.

Just my opinion :)

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

Believe me, its not just what other people think, its me too. Its hard to relax and play or whatever in front of a wide open tube amp, its very intimidating because if you screw up, it tears ur ears in half, its very unforgiving ill say. I really could care less about what other people think, most of them love it, it sound great for gigging, especially when im hot. But it is truly a beast! Scariest amp ive ever played and im a loud freak! The tone is wonderful though...

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

Hehe scary amps are good amps, makes everything more interesting.
I like big open bada$$ amps, just as long as they stay fat I am game.
Don't become too comfy with sound or you'll probally loose some edge.
Bogners are nice, but they do not beat the sound of a Plexi or plexi like amp, they are maybe more flexible and easy...but the rawness and power of those big monsteramps is the real deal.
And you'll probally benefit in the long run using a no bull sound, will benefit your playing.
But that is just my opinion, just do what will make you most happy, that is the key.
I would use a powersoak with that Budda.

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

Well I have a 200 watts plus Hiwatt top....it is a downright scary big mofo amp!!!
Have more balls than three Plexi 100's!!!
And I love all of it, big, fat, firm, open, and you can hear what you play, the funny part it also sounds great at low volumes :smack: :laugh2:

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

Did you ever try pulling 2 of the power tubes out, and using your 8 ohm output into the cab's 16 ohm input? That's one way to bring it down to a 50W level.

Or, get a THD Hotplate that's the same ohm rating as your cabinet.

The nice thing about boutique amps is that they sell fairly quickly, so maybe check out some one's you've heard about, then cash out the Budda as soon as you've got your heart set on one.

Yah, ive done that. It changes the sound a bit, but it does help. But IMO a head and cab HAVE to be a certain level to really work. And the amps speakers project so well at these levels that its kinda nuts, unlike with say...greenbacks. But with low powered speakers it just doest sound the same.....

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

I wonder if you could have Budda install a halfpower switch on the amp?

Other amps worth checking out are Top Hat Emplexador 50, Ecstasy & Shiva,
Budda SD30 head, Dr. Z heads, ENGL, or maybe look into that new company, Mako.

Re: Thinking of selling my Budda....

All good suggestions.

Honestly, the Bogners, TopHat Emplexador (pretty awesome amp, but may not have the type of distortion you want on tap), and Budda amps are all great choices.
