Thinking of trying an EVO 2

Anyone have any opinions on this pickup? I want to try some dimarzios out since i'm pretty familar with duncans and haven't found my pickup with them yet. Its the one that really stuck out in their line of pickups. My 25.5 scale all mahogany guitar has a huge dark sound and i need something to tighten it up and sound really clear and really good for hard rock and metal. I don't want sterile or anything thats why i'm sort of turned off by the regular EVO (or should i get an EVO 1? a local store actually has one of these) and what neck pickup from dimarzio would you recommend to go with either one of these?

Oh and i like to play alot of leads on my neck and bridge pickups.

All i know about the EVO's is that Vai uses em and they are VERY "tinny" sounding, and sound good only when put through a ton of effects and digital tones.

I really dont like dimarzio's. I've tried a D-Sonic and the Fred neck (which i have and im not using and if you want it i'll sell it to ya :p) I really dug the Fred it was really smooth, very smooth. D-Sonic IMO sucked for a heavy pickup compared to anything Duncans got to offer.

The original EVO IS tinny. The EVO 2 in NOT tinny by any means.

Re: Thinking of trying an EVO 2

The Evo2 might be too dark in an all Mahogany axe. The regular Evo sounds great in mahog and definitely isn't tinny at all(i had/have it in alder superstrats and it never was tinny once you set the pup height right).
As for a neck pup, you could of course just use an Evo neck. PAF Pro should also work great. Unfortunately my favorite the Air Norton will probably be way too dark.

Re: Thinking of trying an EVO 2

The Evo2 is a GREAT pickup. Just dont know with Mahogany.

It tightned my Charvel superstrat up really good.

It has a very 1980s metal midrange, very aggressive and complex. The highs are a bit smoother but still it screams, and it is VERY clear. ANY playing slop will be heard instantly.

Re: Thinking of trying an EVO 2

the evo 1 is not as harsh and thin sounding as a screamin demon is it? And how are leads with the evo?

Remember this guitar is naturally huge and dark sounding so its probably gonna benefit from this type of pickup than any other type of wood.

Re: Thinking of trying an EVO 2

by looking at dimarzios bass mid treble ratings the evo 2 is hardly and different than the EVO?

You're writing off an entire company based on 2 of their products? That's reasonable.

No, I'm not. Those are the 2 I have used. I dont like DiMarzio's because I think SD is better and most of their picksups have a serious lack of treble or are just to middy sounding for me. chill out smartass, its an opinion. Are you here to talk about pickups or tell someone their opinion is wrong?

Also, i'm not writing them off, until they come up with something better than what I think SD has to offer, I will use it.

Good grief man, relax. I really didn't mean to offend you. The only thing I was getting at is it's silly to say you don't like a company based on two pickups, one of which you said you liked.

Re: Thinking of trying an EVO 2

The Evolution 2 has the same basic character as the Evolution, but with the highs rolled back a touch. It is less piercing, and,to my ears, slightly less tight on the bass side. Dimarzio's description is really dead-on.

If you dislike the Evolution's overall character (there is a mid-spike, or a kind of in-your-face presence) you may not like the Evolution 2.
However, if you generally like the Evolution, but find it just a little too present, then the 2 will likely fit the bill.

I really liked the Evolution's lows for chord work, but preferred the Evolution 2 for it's slightly softened treble during leads.
I wish I could combine the two...

Re: Thinking of trying an EVO 2

i've never used either EVO before. I did read some reviews, alot of people seem to say its not good for chugging? What is all that about?
