Thinning a Fat amp

I currently play a les paul with an x2n through a 5150 212 combo. I can get some awesome rock tones and some metal grooves, but it seems very round and warm on any setting.

I know the 5150 is a popular metal amp and it should be capable of getting that really tight biting icepicky almost Dimebag sound.

What would you guys recommend I try first to get a tighter sound?

i'd try a Fred pickup and use the 5150 head thru a Marshall cab if i was trying to really change the tone... maybe try some lower output pickups as well... i said the Fred only because i know that pickup sounds great and is brighter then most...

The 5150 has that huge midrange tone that is hard to get toned downed... Even Harder when you use an LP...

it does it's job well for the sound it is meant for but trying to get more Marshallish brighter tones out of it is really hard

Parametric or (gigantic) graphic EQ in the loop. Scoop strategically. Experiment with different ranges.

With an LP, an x2n, and a 5150, you've got a lot of mids to scoop, though. It'll take some work.

Re: Thinning a Fat amp

i had FRED on my strat once and it was...well...too bright. and it couldn't handle much gain, after a point it seemed as it just couldn't cope with it and it would get muddy and weird. i would reccomend it for medium gain setup, as it is very articulated in that area. but for metal - no. you could try playing on a stratocaster-esque type of guitar, that would brighten it up for sure, but i think all you really need is an EQ pedal.
