thoughts on a vintage Jensen 10" C10Q? ... other 10" drivers, ... 110 cabs?

I'm into 10"s currently

I like my alnico Gold 10" an awful lot. And, I'm trying very hard to allocate a Red Fang 10", also (apparently Dr. Z musta bought em all. Just a guess). It will be perfect for so many applications, amps, and speaker blends.

But I'd like another 110 cab (for the RF), and I don't want to spend the prices OEMs tend to charge. I just found out Avatar makes 110s again -- they stopped, but they will be available again in a couple of weeks. But before I knew that, I was shopping around and found the same locally made, dado-constructed etc. radiata pine 110 I almost got a year ago. And it has a vintage Jensen C10Q in it right now. Maybe it's nothing special, maybe it's discovered treasure. I want a Red Fang, but I am being *opportunistic* about this find, in case it is more goodness than I realize.

Thoughts on all this? Good price for a quality radiata pine box with C10Q?

...if I were to get the C10Q 110, I would still need a cab for the Red Fang, d'oh! Counsel me.

good luck with the old Jennies. They are the greatest sounding Fender speakers, but all of them I have tried, and I havent tried that many, need a recone by now.

Cool speaker if you want a 15ish watt speaker with a low db rating.

I like them in pairs or quads but not as a single...

low db? Hm. I already have a speaker for "quiet" applications. That's one of the reasons I like my Gold 10 so much: it's not very loud. It pairs well with other speakers though, and might be a great match with this Jensen.

the guy with the pine cab has no problem yanking the Jensen for me and putting something else in

he said we could swap speakers while I was there and I could try & get whatever, cool huh? It's only 18" wide though, so it will *barely* fit under my Carmen Ghia. That's one nice thing about my Avatar 110: 22" x 18" x 12". It is an enormous 110. Lotta depth with the back partly open. $250 for an empty one. Add a $285 Red Fang and we're at the same price as a Dr. Z 110. Only difference may be the much smaller size and the plastic Z. Decisions.

Yes, low db...the Gold 10 is 98bd, an original C10Q is doign good to give you 95 and 3db is a HUGE difference in terms of volume.

As for the Avatar vs a Dr. Z cab don't get it twisted....Avatar makes a great cab for low bucks but a Dr. Z cab is head and shoulders above an Avatar in terms of construction.

As for the 10 inch Red Fang, why bother, the Red Fane is a clone of the Alnico Celestion but with a higher wattage VC...so if you have a 10 inch Gold then a 10 inch Red Fang is overkill IMO but thats just one mans opinion...

Re: thoughts on a vintage Jensen 10" C10Q? ... other 10" drivers, ... 110 cabs?

why the Red Fang 10 ?

I had one, sounded gnarlier to me than the gold 10 thru the same amps, and louder. I just really liked it. It is a different flavor for a different volume & breakup than what I like with the Gold. Also, and maybe the Gold is not done breaking in, but I don't like using the Gold by itself with as many amps. Rather than blend with other speakers and cabs, instead I hear the Red Fang 10 working well for me by itself in a grab-n-go small cab with a whole bunch of different amps. My Blue and Gold don't fill that role for me; they're becoming more specialized to me.

Re: thoughts on a vintage Jensen 10" C10Q? ... other 10" drivers, ... 110 cabs?

but it's interesting that you think the RF and Gold are similar sounding, is that right?

hm, then if it's overkill due to being much the same thing, I guess I really ought to hear my Gold in a different cab. I've only used that one in the Avatar cab. I will bring it to Olympia and have the guy plug it into the radiata pine cab (that I will likely get as long I am driving to Olympia).

The Alnico 10 is a 10 in version of the alnico gold...the alnico gold is a high poer version of the Celestion blue...

The red fang is Eminences copy of a Celestion blue but with higher power handling...the red fang 10 is a 10 inch version of the 12...

So you see the red fang and the alnico gold 10 are shooting for the same thing...a 10 inch verison of the Blue but in a higher wattage.

To be honest neither excite me but thats just me...

Re: thoughts on a vintage Jensen 10" C10Q? ... other 10" drivers, ... 110 cabs?

that's exactly it and why

I like my blue and gold 10 and I suppose they are similar "sounding", but the blue is low power and high db, whereas the gold is higher power and lower db, so each works better to me in a different application, such as desired volume and breakup.

I want the red fang for a 3rd application, a standalone combination of the above qualities that I get with the blue and gold: both higher power handling *and* high db.

I really like the Weber Ferromax I have in my 6G2 Princeton. Louder, wider freq spread, tighter low end, and the highs don't smear.

here's the cab, and speaking of Princetons, that's an interpretation of a tweed Princeton sitting on top. Dude offered me a SMOKIN deal on the whole shebang, but, I mean, I'm supposed to just be shopping for a cab, maybe a speaker here, ya know. I know I'm gonna plug in and just crap myself, I just know it.

m'kay

but, ya know. Maybe I do have the alnico thing covered enough for now. Why bother with yet another nearly $300 speaker -- and have to deal with finding a cab for it too, more $$$ ...

... when I could go another direction. I forgot the empty, slanted, vertical 212 I have. Not empty, it has a G12T-75 and a dead Celestion Silver series I think it's called, wired for stereo. For a lot less money and trouble I could wire it for mono and stick a couple of G12M Greenbacks in there and have some real fun, and as a matter of fact I think that's exactly what I'm gonna do, and dispense with the rest of this for now.

The Red Fang would have really just been for convenience I guess. A 2-in-1 for what my Blue + Gold give me when I run them together.

Re: thoughts on a vintage Jensen 10" C10Q? ... other 10" drivers, ... 110 cabs?

2 Greenies, inbound. No cab necessary, no pricey alnico driver to acquire. Hijacked my own 10" thread by getting a couple of G12Ms. I actually borrowed a Greenback the other day to see if I was into it. It wasn't in the best cab, and it wasn't sealed, and it was by itself ... but the squish, and the doomy lows, were comfortable and familiar as an old friend. And then I noticed my 212 sitting there with a dead speaker and a T75 I don't use anymore. Blue, gold, and green it is. I believe the Greenies and my Gold 10 have the same sensitivity and I bet they will go smashing together. Simply smashing, wut wut, right-o.
