Thoughts on MESA Single Rec 50 watt head?

Re: Thoughts on MESA Single Rec 50 watt head?

Not a fan, but without slamming the amp- it does have a loose low end and can be fizzy in certain situations. The cleans (on the Solo Recto heads) aren't up there with the Mark's either by popular concensus.

BUT, the single is the best in the line for sure. It depends what tone are you going for, what sound etc.

I talked to someone recently who said the loose low end ADDS to the sound, he's predominantely a rhythm guitarist so maybe i'm too harsh on the amp.

KGMessier mentioned that he puts a treble boost pedal in front of the amp and gets an Angus Young type of tone.

What are you going for?

I disagree, I'd say that the roadster/road king are the best in the line. Awesome recto crunch with incredible clean channels...and everything in between.

The single is a nice one on it's own though. Those thing's can definitely fill up a room. I'd have gotten a single rectifier series 2 if I hadn't had gotten such a good deal on my roadster.

I meant best in the line of the solo heads.

The Road King is the best recto amp (most versatile), but i meant the solo heads.

Sorry about the confusion.

Re: Thoughts on MESA Single Rec 50 watt head?

I have just never been impressed with any of the Dual rec solo amps mostly because they just don't have a great clean tone...if Im gonna bother to buy a 2 or 3 channel, channel switching amp I don't want 31 flavors of distortion, at least one or two good clean tones would be nice. On top of that the crunch tone is just not what it's cracked up to be IMHO.

What are you looking for in an amp?

Re: Thoughts on MESA Single Rec 50 watt head?

i'm not going for anything, it's just a good price, but now I have my choice for the same price, either a "Son of Boogie" mark II i think?, or the Single rec for the same price....who would choose what and for what reasons?

thanks again.

If you have a chance to buy a Mark for the same price as a recto (including the RK) then go for the Mark.

Why?

Great cleans, lead tone & tight low-end response.

Those two are pretty radically different. The Son Of Boogie was a Mark I reissue, and is pretty bare-bones as far as features go. No channel switching, no FX loop, no EQ. I'd normally agree with Rivera on the Mark series being a better choice for the money, especially the models with a built in EQ and channel switching. The Son of Boogie is a pretty limited amplifier though, you'd have to know for sure that that's what you want.

What kind of music do ya play anyways?

Re: Thoughts on MESA Single Rec 50 watt head?

oh, and I'm a fan of bare bones so that is Sure a plus, I'm currently running a JCM 900 2500 model (MKIII Master Volume) and she works wonders for what I do...I run it with Preamp Gain on full, SS gain on Zero with a couple OD's in front of it, Single channel amps are not that big of a deal for me:P

Re: Thoughts on MESA Single Rec 50 watt head?

I owned and gigged regionally with that amp for about 4 years.

It was very sturdy/reliable and suprisingly versatile. WIth Boogies, there is a learning curve to them or else you can make them sound pretty bad. I used mine in an ole fashioned sort of way not even using the footswitch for the channels. I just used my guitar volume.

I could get Stone-sy grind, modern rock to metal tones but it cleaned up really nice when rolling the volume back. The clean was cool but don't expect Fender chime. I especially like the fact that at 50 watts, you could turn it up a bit to really get some tone. The Triple is great if you're playing Stadiums and the Dual was still too much amp for me.

I just got sick of lugging a head and cab and ended up with a Mesa 1 x 12 combo.

Re: Thoughts on MESA Single Rec 50 watt head?

well, I tried to give the "Son of Boogie" a go today, and the **** thing had so many problems with it it wasn't worth it for me, so....I guess I;m getting the 2 channel Single Res Solo this weekend...with a JCM 800 straight 4x12 loaded with GT 12-65's...at a pretty good price of $950 CAD

Re: Thoughts on MESA Single Rec 50 watt head?

I love the dual recto. I love playing them, I love my line 6 model of them. But u have to crank them, so consider a 2x12 or a hotplate. otherwise u just get fizz distortion! I dont have much experience with the single. Most of my heroes have played the dual recto. It has the option of tube preamp, whereas the single recto has only the solid state rectifier which is fine - most metal players use that anyway. but I think the dual recto 3 channel will give u more options, and is gonna cost only a few hundred $ more used. I would just play then buy the dual recto - but either will keep resale value...

Re: Thoughts on MESA Single Rec 50 watt head?

yea I was thinking about a dual recto, but for $550 I can't loose money, only gain money on this purchase so even if i play it for a bit i can flip it for more and get something better.

and well, who knows I may actually like the sound of it...haha all I wanted was the Marshall 4x12 for my JCM anyways:P
