Thoughts on Nazgul and Sentient?

I'm pickup shopping again and looking for a bit more modern distortion tone.I have an ESP Eclipse and am considering swapping the 59/Custom set for A Nazgul/Sentient set.I have also considered the Bare Knuckle Miracle Man set.Any info on either is appreciated.

Re: Thoughts on Nazgul and Sentient?

THe NAzgul does one thing really well. It is an extremely EQ'd pickup that sounds amazing with sick levels of gain. If you like any versatility at all, go with a Pegasus, but if all you do is crushing distortion, the Nazgul is the one.

Yeah that's fine lol the ones I was really looking into were the Dimarzio d activators,Bare Knuckle Miracle man and Nazgul/Sentient.The Dimarzios sounded a little to bland tho imo so I was more focused on the other 2 sets lol

Have you tried different tubes in the amp? Or maybe a different pedal in front of the amp?

The point is that the distortion comes from the amp. You can get a modern distortion tone with a production floor 59 Model and the right amp.

As for the pickups you're asking about, that BKP will be the more scooped option. Maybe good for a thrash metal vibe. The Duncan's will have more mids in those bridge models and a fairly typical Duncan scoop in that neck model. The D Activator might be the most precise, with more focused low end and good for lower tunings and plenty of cut if you need to pinch through a dense mix.

It has Jjs and I'm using a Maxon 808x.The Custom sounds pretty good but the definition is what it's lacking to me.Its a good power chord pickup but under high gain it gets messy.

You may have watched this already.

I have an dimarzio evolution for a 7 string I run through a boosted triple rec. It might not have as much distortion as a Nazgul but it damn sure has the definition you're looking for.

Re: Thoughts on Nazgul and Sentient?

Yeah I saw that and the only Dimarzios I like are the d activators lol I appreciate it tho.

Re: Thoughts on Nazgul and Sentient?

The Nazgul is a very aggressive, modern sounding pickup. The amp and pedal you have is a good start, no worries there. I'm actually dumping a couple Nazguls BECAUSE they are a bit too modern voiced for me; I prefer the Black Winter and Distortion. If you're looking fir tight, aggressive, articulate grind, it's an excellent choice.

One word of warning: I had a Nazgul in a mahogany bodied guitar for a while and I found it to be very honky. You may dig it, I did not. I like a lot of mids in my sound but there was something going on I didn't care for. It was more pleasant to me in more neutral or brighter guitars.

Give it a shot if you want something more modern and aggressive sounding than a Custom. I did really like the Nazgul more going into my 5150 than my H&K, so that may be a plus for your situation. I hope that helps!

What sucks the most isn't the only thing the local guitar shops carry is Jbs,jazz, tonezone and variety of emgs :\.The most common pickups.I think I'm jus gonna have to pull the trigger on a set lol

This is everywhere you go. Any sort of 'specialty' pickups (not a JB or a 59), you will have to order. I don't mind that, though...usually free shipping and no tax!

Agreed.

Not in a guitar stores best interest to have something setting on a shelf collecting dust and depreciating when they can stock up on "sure things". JBs and SuperDs and 81/85s are going to always sell.
