Was looking at the Steinberg MR816X or CSX but stumbled upon the Roland.

I am looking at a good quality 8 channel pre audio interface that is expandable and really portable.

How much recording does your friend do and on what level?

The steinberg interfaces have tons of great reviews + buzz online but all of that has to be taken with a grain of salt. People tend to convince themselves what they want to believe and will bash equipment they haven't spent real time with. On top of that the Roland is BRAND SPANK'N NEW so finding anything (good or bad) is tough.

May have to go with the Roland simply because many of the extra features of the Steinberg are tied to cubase/nuendo.

for that price, here's what I would go for... recommended by a pro studio in town...

550 and PACKED with features...you would need a smaller 8 track mixer to utilize all of the TRS inputs with mics tho

Well I'll eventually need 8 inputs so no motu ultralite. Yeah I could buy a multi channel mic pre and wire it into the motu but I'd rather buy it all in one package. When I have more $$$ to spend on it, I'll eventually go towards a small rack with pres, converters, ect.

Just ordered one! Will give a full review once I put it through some recordings!
