Today I aged the plastic parts on Thursday Burst... just subtle aging as I didn't want to make it look bad. First sanded the shiny surface off the pickguard and bathed it in coffee without any results. Then I sanded a little more and used brown colored shoewax.

IMO it tuned out quite good and I'm happy with the results :)

Oh and I stated before in some posts that it has Keiyo PAF MkII since it's a 2005 Tokai and I've read that Tokai switched to Keiyo pups.

When I checked under the pickups when I took the rings of I was stamped Gotoh Pickups. So I don't know if I just got one of the last with Gotoh PAF MkII or if the statement about Tokai changing to Keiyo pups is false!

I just wanted you to know this since I wrote that it had Keiyo in another thread some time ago!

Once again: excellent work, and great attention to detail! I'm a lot like you: I'd rather have a couple of guitars that I put a lot of love into than a roomfull that rarely get touched.

I got some cream pickup rings from stewart-mac a year or so ago, and when they came in the mail they were the wrong colour . . . sort of pinkish and not cream enough . . . it's been driving me nuts for quite a while. I tried soaking them in bleach for three days to get them to change colour, but that didn't work. This sounds like a great idea to try, thanks!

Ratherdashing I'm with you on that one... Of course, sometimes it would be fun to have alot of different guitars to play on. But in the end it's only one that's going to be played at a time and I rather have a few guitars that I really like and enjoy and have time to play, adjust, mod and improve. To have three guitars that you love is better than to have 20 that you don't have the time for. :bigthumb:

GuitarStv I've read about that alot of aftermarket parts that are supposed to be cream colored are in fact all too pinkish. But I'd say that watch out if you try this, because many of the shoepolish stuff have too much red in it and that won't really help you to get them cream colored, probably just make it worse!

But I'd say that after you have sanded down the shiny surface you could try to soak em in coffee for a longer time than I did (maybe a couple of hours). And also add 1-2 spoons of curry in the mix. That would probably make em more yellowish (I think I've read that Gearjoneser that tried that). Or if you find a very light yellowish brown shoe polish. How well the color sticks seems to differ alot from plastic to plastic, in my case it was alot harder to get the color to stick to the pickguard than it was to get it to stick to the pup rings. Let us know how it turns out if you give it a shot!

Thanks a lot for the ideas . . . I don't really want to relic my guitar at all, I just havn't been able to find pickup rings that match quite right . . . my cream coloured '59 is the right colour, and my cream pickguard that I ordered matches the '59 and the binding around the guitar . . . every time that I go into a guitar shop though, all I see are those damned pinkish pickup rings. Who the heck wants those?

You're welcome! okay, that means that you probably won't like the matte surface that you will get by sanding the parts... still sanding them is a must, otherwise they won't get any color to stick because the shiny surface protects the plastic from that.

But you can do it this way. First sand 'em, then color them a little more than you want and then use carpolish compound to get the shinyness (wrong spelled :laugh2: ) back and when polish them back a little of the color will be polished away.

Great job! You went to a lot of effort, with both the aging and electronic work. I don't like messing with small parts, but I like aging Fender pickguards. I use a scouring pad with Comet to dull the plastic, making it more porous. I've gotten the best results using tea and yellow curry in cold water, soaking it for days till it's way too dark. Then, use bleach or sunlight to fade it. Whatever you do, NEVER use hot water, or it'll warp the plastic.
