Tightness

Re: Tightness

Well you need a tight amp to begin with. Then you shouldn't exagerate on highs and presence(fizz) and maybe back of the mids a little if you really need to, also too much bass can cause mud. Bigger and tighter strings will also help with the tightness of your sound.
Apart from those equipment issues your technique is the most important factor. Once your lefthand-muting is good you won't have notes anymore that ring out when you don't want them to.

Re: Tightness

Thanks for your replies guys! Loserchief is getting close to what I'm referring to. But aside from achieving tightness of tone, I'm looking for practical woodshedding tips to get those notes lined up exactly with the drum beats (like in Jeff's newest JSX clips).

Re: Tightness

If you want to be precise on the beat just practice with a metronome all the time or even better with a drummer, that way you'll learn. it's an experience thing.

Re: Tightness

Ah, gotcha. Nothing like a good sonic example to drive the point home. Great clips.

That said, I'll be watching this thread with interest -- but I don't have any tips. My right hand is pretty dang sloppy.

What he said.
Pickups, amps, and strings will only get you so far. The rest is up to you.

Re: Tightness

No reverb and a noise gate?? That pops in my mind when I hear of tight stuff.

Just my 2 cents, I play loosely.

Re: Tightness

Play some drumms!I really mean it.Check some possibilities to play some drumms and understand how rythm works! That will bring you to the point where you understand how to "have " the rythm ,not to follow it!
Palm muting is not a "common thrashmetal stuff"!.It's the ebst way to controle the strings.so once you get to palm mute and open every note you like to ,tight playing will be as normal as playing any note!

Oh BTW ,try to play some polyrythms and backbeats.Hal times and triplets. It won't be easy for a week or so.But after that period ,you will be the guitarist who actually can play and think!Thinking is mostly not a common quality in guitar world!
