Time for a change (Strat content)

I've been using an older USA Strat with Texas Specials for the last few years. It's my favorite guitar I've ever owned, but occasionally I get a bug to trade it. Last year, I was trying to get a Les Paul, currently a PRS. I'm wondering if it's time to go H-H with this guitar.

I like dirty, funky tones. Shane Theriot, Oz Noy, Jimmy Herring, Jimi, SRV, etc... Good cleans are a must, don't care about super high gain.

The rest of my stuff is an old silver Super Reverb, a bunch of dirt (Green Rhino, Soul Food, Big Muff, etc...)

What would you do?

Well you can go HSS here.

Jimi & SRV are single coil sounds for the most part

I think you might not want to venture further than a Lonestar strat setup - HSS, Peraly Gates Plus and 2 Texas Specials

Re: Time for a change (Strat content)

One of the issues I've always had is the neck & middle pickups being louder than the bridge. A 'bucker would certainly help out there.

When I listed those guys above, I'm not trying to duplicate those tones, per se. I've been S-S-S for awhile, I love it, but... just seems like it's time for something different. Do I ease out of it with a little bridge 'bucker, or go hog wild with two full-sized ones?

Re: Time for a change (Strat content)

You might find a Sentient neck and a 59/C bridge wired to a three way switch for "slutbucker" in the middle position to be a nice setup. Wire the tone control for a master tone and a master bass cut (like G&L PTB wiring) and you will have quite a fun time. Great tones and plenty of versatility will be had.

Re: Time for a change (Strat content)

The Lil' buckers are cool, but I didn't find them to be the substitute for HB's that I was looking for. I had, and still have, a double fat Strat. It's a Yamaha from the early 80's or late 70's. I put a whole slew of HB's in it years ago, trying to sort it out. Ultimately a CC in the bridge was the best sounding. For the neck, I liked PG, Seth and APH to match with the CC.

The CC, in a Strat and at least for me didn't act or sound like a higher output pickup. It sounded very rock and roll without being aggressive. It was just a great match. It's something for you to look into at least.

+1

The CC is great in a Strat, and I've always wanted to try an A2 59/Custom Hybrid in a HSS Strat. I think it'd balance better with the neck and middle SCs, but it'd still split to the Custom coil for bridge / middle notch.

Yeah, my #1 Strat has that in the bridge and it is the best pickup I've ever had in a Strat. I paired it with a PGn and they have a fairly similar raunchiness to them.

Re: Time for a change (Strat content)

I'd go HH (my favorites are an Alnico II Pro & Custom Custom) and wire them up on their own pickguard. Wire a molex connector for the jack and ground on this pickguard and your old one, and switch them out as you want/need.

Re: Time for a change (Strat content)

Certainly nothing wrong with going humbucker. I think you could easily get those tones with different singles, however.

Re: Time for a change (Strat content)

jimmy used a pair of 59's for a long time with independent volumes, i find having a volume for each pup makes things much more versatile

Re: Time for a change (Strat content)

This makes it no longer Pickup Lounge content, but a big part of me says sell the Fender and get a PRS. I’ve wanted one for 25 years, maybe I’ve been waiting too long.

Do it. If you have never owned a PRS you need to fix that ASAP. You have not lived until you have played a well setup PRS with a set of A4 PAFs.
