Timing/tempo

I'm fairly new to home recording and am curious more than anything else, but How are you guys keeping time/tempo when recording yourself. I know when I am playing with a Drummer and a bass player I can always hear the beat, but when I am recording myself and I am laying down a rhythm track(which I tend to do first) after listening back to it I am noticing some timing issues. Do you use a click track? Or are you using some for of a drum program? If you are using a drum program which one?

Thanks guys!

Re: Timing/tempo

Click track, always.

I typically lay down the drums first and sync everything else off that.

Depending on the complexity of the click (time/tempo changes, etc) I'll either just use a straight metronome, or I'll program a sequence for it.

Ditto. I find that even when I think I'm in tempo without a click track, I find wince-worthy missteps on playback.

Re: Timing/tempo

I record everything with the click since not all my songs have stable time signatures.
Click never fails ,and makes you a better player!

Re: Timing/tempo

well i shouldn't need click...but my internal clock sucks arse...not that it shows
