Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

First post, yay! Okay, so here's the deal. I've got a mahogany/rosewood LP style guitar. I'm looking for a smooth, clean, not too fat sound in the neck pickup. Kind of a jazzy sound, but something that will wail if I honk it out. Also with a decent split sound. In the bridge pickup I want an edgy, thin but not brittle, roots rock/70s rock kinda sound that I can throw some suspended fifths on. Something pretty hot and raunchy with not too much meat on it. What I've been looking at is maybe an SH-2 Jazz pickup in the neck and a Phat Cat in the bridge. What do ya'll think? Thanks!

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

I'd go with the SH-2 Neck and SH-4 Bridge set, dude.

Rock it.

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

yea, i bet the JB/jazz combo would be cool........cause the JB is not really FAT or anything, but its cutting and edgy, but still solid sounding, at least the couple times ive played a guitar with one.....

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

He described exactly what my 60n/89b set sounds like. might not be QUITE as thin as you want but, i dont know.

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

Yeah, I think that would be a good one too. Honestly, though, I think I like the P90 sound better. Dunno. They're really close, but if the Phat Cat sounds like the Custom P90, that's a killer pickup.

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

the 89 splits to a single coil, which btw sounds amazing. Wont be as full sounding as a P90 but the 89 sounds really great in either single coil or humbucking mode. The 60 in the neck is perfect imo.

Im going out in dangerious territory were people are going to flame me, but imo the 89 in the bridge in humbucking mode sounds like a monster single coil.

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

Ask some other people, im not a wood expert or nothing, so i only know how great they sound in my guitar.

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

Pearly Gates splits well... U could go for a Phat Cat Bridge/ Phat Cat Neck set also, just a thought..

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

Yeah, I thought about that too. Dunno. I'll look into it more.

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

The good thing about a Phat Cat set is together they make a humbucking effect too...

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

Screaming demon or pearly gates BRIDGE
and Full shred or Jazz neck, oops, forget about teh full shred.
JAZZ neck or seth lover.

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

Why not going for a Phat Cat set? Your description of the neck pickup it is what I allways thought of a good neck P-90. You will miss the split option but you can't have it all.

And well match pickups are a joy to play. When you Eq a neck pickup to the configuration you think tone it is best you will find that the brige also sounds great. If the set it is not matched you will have to have different Eq's for each pickup.

I have never tried them but, to give you an idea of the tone, people ussually says that tone it similar to the Vintage P-90.

Yeah man, I'm leaning more and more toward a set of PCs. Actually, I think you're right about the neck pickup, it is more of what I'm going for. It is a little less thick than the jazz, and it would definately sound more open. Thanks.

They need to sell PCs in sets for cheaper

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

Ive also been told if youre going to get a phat cat set alot of your accoustic sound comes through, so you should like how your guitar sounds accoustically. I know im going for a set of Cats in my basswood guitar once i fininsh upgrading my soon to arrive strat!

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

My suggestion,as I have a LP TYPE,MADE FOR ME BY HERITAGE GUITARS(I am an endorsee),are jazz SD IN NECK,JB IN BRIDGE WITH COIL TAPS,

Re: Tips anyone? Trying to find THAT sound!

Just a comment on the Phat Cats....
I have a set in a tele that I made out of Warmoth parts, and I love them. But, with a totally clean sound, they're a little too 'honkey' for me. I have another guitar with Gibson P-90's in it and it sounds totally different clean.
With a little gain, though, the PC's rule.

Stevo has some clips of a Phat Cat neck in a LP somewhere if I can find it... It sounds awesome.

Ok here's the phat cat neck clip with some light gain.
