To modify or not, that is the question.

A Skater

New member
My Vox is just not cutting it with the cleans as they're too low, and I'm seeking a bit better tone. So now I'm wondering whether if I should modify my amp or save up that money and invest it in a tube amp. Now here's the problem:

If I start to save up, I'm going to buy the Crate V30 Palomino, which would be about $550. So, since I lack a employment, I probably won't buy it until the summer.

If I do mod my Vox, I would buy a new speaker and pre-amp tube. However, I'm not sure what change I should do first.

Advice? Crit?

Classic 30

This man is telling the truth. (see sig)

You can get a used Classic 30 for about 300 bucks. I absolutely love mine. Changing the preamp tube in your amp will do nothing. With a new speaker, you'll get a little bit better sound but not worth the money spent most likely. Save up for a tube amp you'll be more then happy.

Which Vox do you have?

Is it something like an AC15 or 30 with real tubes in both pre & power section? Or is it a modeling amp with a solid state power amp and one "toob" somewhere inside?

HUGE difference.

But, since you're broke & unhappy with the current tone...I'd start to save up for 'something' but I'd ALSO purchase a couple three different tubes and a speaker since they're realitively inexpensive, swap 'em all around...and start to refine your ear on tone.

Take advantage of educating yourself on what each piece in the chain does and how they all affect each other in the grand universal scheme of things.

In the very long run that'll be of greater use to you as a player, and who knows? Maybe you'll find the tone you like...maybe 'ya won't. At the most you'll be out about $100-150. Buy used speakers if you can, test 'em first. All 'ya need is a 9-volt battery.

Speakers in paticular make a COLOSSEL difference in tone, "Love it" to "hate it" with one swap.

They're also the FIRST corner to be cut in just about all mass produced amps.

Given the amp...I'd roll on the speaker before anything else.

Especially a Crate!!
