To the straight into amp guys

Re: To the straight into amp guys

JB loaded superstrat + DSL 50 + Keeley SD1 + a THD hotplate offers up some great tones.

The JB gives alot of clarity to the sound and tons of scream!!! Add the tight low end and hot mids of the Marshall and it's pure rock and roll

Re: To the straight into amp guys

My vote would be for an 2203/04 800, or modded 800 like a Seal or Splawn.

Of course....that's what I've got...help, I'm being opinionated again!:chairfall

Really though they can get that old school, crushing crunch going on. If you want the tighter bolder low end stick with KT88s or 6550s. I've currently got KT88s, and really like them, but I've started drifting back toward more of a classic Marshall feel/tone.

Re: To the straight into amp guys

I had a jcm 800, my vote goes for that over the plexi I owned; because you get more high gain on tap that way

Re: To the straight into amp guys

Metal is not my main thing, but i WAS impressed when i heard an SD JB/Jazz-equiped Ibanez (brown AX-something) through a 100watter Marshall AVT combo !

OK, saying that, they guy did use a Rocktron Zomie for his gritty high-gain parts, but for dirty OD, it was ony the JB into the AVT, with a little crunch from the amps dirty channel.

Great metal tone on a budget, South African style !

Re: To the straight into amp guys

Well, I'm not going to use the JB. Great sweet, spongy, versatile tone- but my EMG 81 works much better for me. But keep the Marshall amps coming. :)
I wanna know what could be the best match for me in volume and rip when necessary. Thanks guys and keep it loud!!!!!!!!!

Re: To the straight into amp guys

be like black label society and zakk wyde with the emgs into the modded jcm 800 --> how classic would that be???

Re: To the straight into amp guys

....Marshall setup is what Marshall do you think sounds good for traditional Heavy Metal tone? ....

"Traditional Heavy Metal Tone" is about as vague as you can get, like asking "what pickup is best for Rock".

Are you thinking more Manowar style "traditional"?? Or more Sabbath style?? Or possibly more direction of Metallica??

Those are already 3 quite distinct directions that yould all be considered "traditional" by at least some..... you´ll really need to at least point us in a general direction ;)

:D :D :D

I'm a straight-into-amp guy and have really been enjoying the sound of my JB-loaded DK2M into my Pro Mod. I'd say based on that, you're probably in a somewhat similar ballpark.

Should be real nice.

Well i have to say that i have two kind of tastes!
1)the tones that i really love and get in mood ,or just get nutts and bang my head. The splawn pro mod is that sound!Rich ,lots of balls ,and some nice "wideness" which lacks on marshall 800.I love that tone for slow ,fat ,ballsy riffing wich bludgens everything!
2)The tone that i really dig to play ,and get fast and furious when i get it.Cornford Mk50 ii and Engl powerball/fireball are good examples for that! Those are the ones that i use both for riffing and soloing.Just add some dealy and phaser ,and the rythm tone gets the lead feeling.Awesome!
i am glad taht you have that splawn and really dig it.Nothing is more inspiring as the "self" expression with a huge tone!

Re: To the straight into amp guys

Hmmm... Traditional as in Accept's 1986(?)- Russian Roulette; sounds like Melodic Metal (of the time) but can crank out a tune like the opening track "TV War, (as if this info helps anyone:laugh2:... anyone heard this besides me:laugh2:?). You crank the amp gain and some volume to ten, but if your pickup is powerful enough to overdrive the amp, you get great crunch and sustain circa Marshall latter 80's maybe- not like the Mesa/Boogie immense amount of overdrive, but great for heavy rock and just a pinch more than enough to qualify for some thrash- not like Obituary (Florida death metal I know). Not sludgy and/or crude like late 70's and early 80's Marshall tone, but more taut sounding and crunching. If anyone needs more than this just ask. You've helped so far just recommending some amps, maybe this'll lead the craniums in a more pointed direction. :fingersx:
