Hey guys! I know pretty much nothing about wiring so I'm seeking some help here...
The Strat I'm getting has 3 singe coils, a volume control and a tone for the neck pickup as well as one for the middle pickup.
I will put a humbucker (bridge) and a single coil (neck) pretty much as soon as I get it. I also wish to change the volume control pot to a 500k one and wire it only to the bridge pickup. I'm also wishing to disconect the cap on the neck's tone to turn it into a volume control (250k would then be correct) and use the middle tone control as an overall tone control.
Here's a little sum up:
Volume 1: bridge (500K, new pot)
Volume 2: neck (250K, just unsolder the cap)
Tone : all positions (I'll probably also replace it with a 500k pot and wire the existing cap to it)

5 way switch:
1: humbucker full on
2: split humbucker
3: humbucker + single
4: split humbucker + single neck
5: single neck

Is this possible and if so, how?

Can you clarify a couple things:

Are you converting an SSS to HS, or to HSS?

I'm not sure how you mean #2 and #3. Connecting a humbucker and a single in parallel would be "normal". So what did you want in position #2? Did you mean "series"? You could connect a humbucker and a single in series, but that would be unusual. (And probably sound bad.)

Also, in #2 and #3 you refer to a "single", and in #4 and #5 you refer to an SC. Is that the same pup?

If you could clarify those points, we can go from there.

Yeah, what Artie said. Are you going to have 3 pickups or just 2? If just 2, what are you doing to do about that hole in the middle where the middle pickup used to be? (Just an aesthetics question but not totally unimportant.)

In using more than one pickup at a time, Artie's right again, and on two counts: a) parallel is normal, because b) multiple pickups in series usually sounds bad (muddy).

I'm going to have 2 pickups in an H/S configuration, sorry for the confusion... and yeah I guess I meant series. I thought that positions 2 and 4 on a strat were series already, as well as 2 in a toggle switch for an LP. So they're all parralel then?
I'm getting a custom pickguard, with two slanted single coil holes ah and I see about the series wiring... I think position two will then be the split humbucker, let me edit that.

Ok, as long as you don't dream about me. :laugh2:

In order to get that combination, you'll need to do either of two things:

1. Use a Super Switch, or . . .

2. Use a standard 3-way lever, and a push/pull pot.

Let me know if one of those will work for you, and we'll go from there.

Superswitch. It will fit a Strat's standard electronics cavity right?
Right now the guitar I think is wired like a Standard Stratocaster with three single coils, its two tone controls and its volume control.
Though wait... I'm getting a new pickguard so holes won't matter much (gotta love front loaded guitars). Would it be cheaper or easier you think to do the toggle + push pull solution? I'll go check out prices on VoxHumana.

I also fear that the electronics cavity won't be deep enough for the push pull pot.

So you're using a single-coil sized humbucker in the bridge like Li'l 59 or something?

Ok, just need to clarify a couple more things. That first link you have is not the proper type of push/pull switch. In fact, it doesn't look like a pp at all, but a twist on/off switch. I'm guessing that they just put the wrong pic with the right part #. But its one of those things you'ld want to double-check before ordering.

Did you decide whether or not you want the series connection? That will help determine whether or not it's better to use a push/pull, or the Super Switch.
Basically, if you want "split" operation, but don't care about the series connection, I'ld go 3-way and PP. If you want split and series, I'd go Super Switch. (Unless you want to use two push/pull's.)

Let us know, and I'll work you up a diagram tomorrow, or the next day. (Things are getting busier at work.)

Nothing will be in series. All standard parralel. Basically the biggest concern is splitting the bridge humbucker and also mixing it with the neck pickup. Maybe a regular 5 way can now do it?
