Tokai Love Rock flash

Hi bros,

Never got around to showing this when I got it.

My sister and her boyfriend gave me this as a present around december.. Bloody awesome axe. Its an 2007 MIJ Tokai Love Rock - I dont know what model to be precise. Its a 2 piece mahogany body, rosewood fretboard and mahogany neck.. The top is maple I think.. Probably an LS92 or LS85? Pickups were Gotoh LP-F pafs, pots are alpha 500k (This apparently helps figure out what model it is? Anyone know this?) Its a bit of a one off. The color is some sort of floor shop custom thing, and it has a blank headstock - it doesn't say Love Rock. I quite like this, gives it a very clean look.

Anyway, these are some good pictures of it. Since then, its had a zebra Slash set fitted and it is probably the best guitar I have ever had. I cant put my finger on it, it just sings better, feels better than any other axe I have ever had. Its a work horse, and has its share of scratches and dings, cracks around the neck joint from bending the neck etc, but it works and has never let me down. Also, the 50s neck is quite clever. Its so thick that people wont borrow it at jams or gigs, so I dont get blood on my pickups.

The plan is to get all the hardware switched for Tonepros or Gotoh, get new caps etc - I am thinking one of those RS guitarworks kits.
I want to keep it oldschool.

I have been thinking about switching the hardware for gold - any opinions on this? :)

Enjoy the pictures. :)

Re: Tokai Love Rock flash

Well I've eyed up any number of Tokai's over the years, but have never seen that finish on one of their LP style guitars before, though I have seen it on at least one of their SG style ones. For the ones where the wood shows under the finish, I believe the tops are solid maple, but with a flame veneer on the LS85's, but I'm not sure on the LS92. On the LS150, there's no veneer, and the flame goes all the way through (should you ever choose to find out). They are great guitars though and very nicely made.

Oh, and you could go with gold h/w on that, but it looks pretty classy and nicely understated as it is.

Re: Tokai Love Rock flash

The top isn't a veneer. Its a full size piece of maple, like my old Les Paul Standard.. So I dunno which one it is. I managed to track down the guitar shop that originally sold it, but they weren't able to help me with what it is. I doubt it is an LS150 as those were one piece mahogany AFAIK.

I think its cool that its unique. I rarely see any Les Paul standards, copies or Gibsons, in this kinda white. Its always old Customs. :)

Re: Tokai Love Rock flash

With that finish, I wouldn't expect them to use a veneer - that would only make sense for them to do with a guitar they want to show off a flamed top on. As for the LS150, they definitely do produce those with a solid maple top; my nearest guitar shop gets them in from time to time, but in nowhere near the quantities he could sell - so far, I've not seen a solid mahogany one, but I'd certainly be interested in seeing one.

Re: Tokai Love Rock flash

Ahh ok :) Hmm, I cant actually remember if it has a flamed top or not - will check next time I change pickups.

It could be a LS140 perhaps? But I guess we will never know, I know of no sure way to find out

Re: Tokai Love Rock flash

I would say it was just a special color run of whatever their entry level MIJ standard was that year that would normally have a ebony or goldtop finish. 150s would have had a flame top and one piece body.

At any rate, who cares? Really nice looking axe and want to see some pics with the slashers in it!

Re: Tokai Love Rock flash

Cool guitar!

I know very little about Tokais but I DO know that I'd go with black plastic and gold hardware. It'd be a knockout!

Re: Tokai Love Rock flash

WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is freaking awesome!!!!!

Don't ever get rid of that.

Nice call on Casino dude!

Re: Tokai Love Rock flash

Thanks bros :) I tried playing abit with that Les Paul editor on the Frank montag site http://frankmontag.com/editors.htm

I dont know if gold hardware is right for this one... Unless its a Custom, it seems almost too much.. Perhaps it should just stay as it is?

Now, a more serious question. The first thing I am going to do, is change the tuners as they slip. I know they are metric, but unfortunately I dont have a ruler anywhere near me. Does anyone know what size these are? 8,5mm?

Thanks :) And have a great weekend everyone

Re: Tokai Love Rock flash

If I was in Riyadh, I could measure the ones on my DCII - they should be the same - but I'll not be back there until 12th of June. If you can wait that long, I can measure up for you.
