Tom Morello uses MIM teles!

Hi guys i got the october issue of guitar worl witht he guyf rom phish on the cover, and at the last page fo the mag it shows toms rig and he uses a 1982 mim tele as one of his guitars! thats cool how a guitarist can sound so awesome and use gear everyone can afford i really wanna go out and buy me a mim tele and add some duncans and have some fun.

Don't buy a guitar just because an artist you like uses it. Be original!

Why not? Just 'cause he's getting a Tele doesn't mean he's going to sit around and play nothing but Rage songs on it.

Plenty of people buy gear because one of their heroes use it. If the fact that someone they look upto makes them like playing that guitar just a little bit more because of it, all the power to 'em.

It's just a guitar...

Yeah, but I think we'd have some real music out today if everyone was original and did their own thing.

If you like tele's, go for it! But don't go spend your money on something you might not like.

I think it's cool that Tom Morello can get such an awesome basic tone AND all those crazy noises out of a really simple rig. A great example of being creative with what you've got.

Go for it. I own a MIM tele (72 custom), and it's great.

its not surprising, it isnt hard to get good tone with a sub professional guitar and good other gear

not EVERY band has to be original, in fact 90% are not original, but if its the style of music i enjoy then i like it more. RATM is more original than most of the punk i listen to, but id still rather listen to the punk. Im not saying dont be riginal, i just think if everyone wasalways totally original then we would be missing out on some of the people who take something thats been done before, but enhance it slightly and play it to perfection.

Everything on that guitar is stock too. His equipment is simple but his technique is crazy(at least some of the songs are).

I've thought about the MIM Fender Tele Custom. Just don't know how different it sounds from a LP. I don't dig the vintage teles, ouch.

You say he used this as 'one' of his guitars. This may not be the one his main sound is based on then?
I know the band but not much about his gear, but if he is like lots of pros he can afford many guitars and probably uses each for a specific task.
Whereas us mortals expect a guitar to cover all bases usually.

I know he's not Tom Morello, but the dude from Los Lonley boys uses MIM strats too, stock. He's pretty good, and his tone is quite nice. I was suprised when I read this too. Guess it just goes to show you that technique and your amp are probably the biggest influencers of your tone. Not that guitar/pups, don't matter. But I think amp and techinque matter more.

I didn't even know Fender was making stuff in Mexico in 1982. I thought the Fender Mexico plant was relatively new (in the last 20 years or so.) Learn sumpthin' new every day.

Does anyone know when the Mexican Fender factory first opened and first started pumping out Fender guitars?

I've got a 1990's Guitar World that says the exact same thing...this isn't quite the revelation I was hoping for. :laugh2:

well just to cleat things up, im going off what guitar world has said. Also i dont wanan be liek tom morello at all, but i was planning on eevntually getting a MIA tele but hey if a MIM tele is good enough for tom its good enough for me! Although id have to mod it but hey its better than paying double for an American....or is it?....

He has a strat for standard, the tele is used for drop D, and a LP for drop B.

And he has a custom "Arm the Homeless" guitar, and his pawnshop "Creamy" guitar that he uses for certain songs (I think he recorded parts of ' freedom' with it.

His drop B tuning is BADGBE, like in Gasoline by Audioslave.

"Soul Power" is the strat he uses for Audioslave, Arm the Homeless was for RATM :)

i rather be cliche than have sh|tty tone :laugh2:

although i do feel you are correct to some extent, if there were more original guitarists i dont the the music would be as crappy as it is today, but more than anything, originality is from the guitarist, not the guitars
