Tone and Amp Volume...always related ?

Re: Tone and Amp Volume...always related ?

Just wanted to say thanks again to all for not thinking that this was a dumb question, and for responding.

Good amp = The more you turn it up, the better tone gets.

I was at band practise today and some band was playing extremely loud next to us. I turned the 4x12 into their direction and cranked my Bogner Ecstasy, a very loud amp! needless to the tone was huge! No way to describe such a tone.
They actually dropped some volume after that :D

I don't think it's a stupid question at all, loud amps are a great subject to talk about anyway. But don't tell me you didn't already knew the answer? :D

I suspected, from reading and talking to friends, that the tone would improve. However, I wasn't sure how much you would have to turn up the amp to get the improvement/at what point on a 1 to 10 setting to expect changes, how dramatic the changes would be, and if you could go past the "sweet spot" and the tone might/would deteriorate.

Looks like I got more answers and suggestions than I ever expected...so the question was not as bad as I originally thought.

Cheers

What you need to do is when nobody is home................crank your Super. Set everything a 7 and then adjust the EQ to your liking. Be Warned You are about to enter a realm that you may not be able to ever leave! Once you hear the tone its hard to go back to uninspiring tone!. Lew has the real answer............. tube amps don't really begin to shine until you get the volume over 5. You can set the amp like that and then roll the volume on the guitar down. It gives great versatility. Here is a great way to understand how a cranked amp responds. Jimi Hendrix playing the Wind Cries Mary......... A Marshall amp Cranked up with the volume on the guitar rolled down. Jimi Hendrix playing Voodoo Child A MArshall amp Cranked ant the guitar turned all the way up. Thats pretty much how versatile it can be ( not taking into consideration the massive Chops Jimi had)

Most amps have a sweet spot, where it sound great, and any more volume is too dirty or whatever, and any less is too clean or unresponsive.
