Last night I picked up my gibson faded SG, that has a 490R in the neck, in which I swapped out the A2 magnet for an A5 quite awhile ago. Had the output levels, gain set for that "mostly clean til you dig in" tone, and the only effect was a bit of digital delay. Hit a note, bent it up with a bit of vibrato, and was blown away by the complex, layered swirling tone. The notes had a definite beginning, blooming middle, and ending harmonics as they trailed off. Sat there for over an hour and just played, totally caught up in the depth of the tones I was getting. I haven't spend much time using the neck pickup of this SG, but now I'm a huge fan.
I just wanted to make an observation that sometimes we spend so much time chasing the elusive "holy grail" tones, that sometimes we don't realize that it's right under our fingertips, and savor it. Yeah, sometimes you catch that elusive tone!
