EDIT:

Redid it... again... in Pro Tools.

LLL - FYLT SH5 PT

=======================================================================

Now that I have some time after my last project, let's take that clip I posted earlier:

https://soundcloud.com/lefty-lounge-lizard/lll-fylt-sh5-dry-ed-l-me-r-test

Ed's tone on the left channel has been "studioized"... my tone on the right chanel is 100% dry tapped off the SM57 mic.

So let's head on down to the studio with that clip...

...take my part of it (the right channel)...

...and EQ it, compress it, put a phaser on that one part... and slap a little echo chamber on it (just like Ed's has in the left channel).

Here's what you get:

...

Now let's throw a little Dave, Alex and Mike in the mix:

Same exact guitar track of mine in each of the three clips.

The pickup of course is the majestic Seymour Duncan SH-5 Custom.

Sounds awesome! ..the tone's all there but needs maybe a tad more roundness & warmth, slightly too crisp to my ears, but only slightly. Well done as always.. :bigthumb:

Thanks. Agreed - just slightly more spikey than Ed's tone. Even my wife mentioned.

I spent some "quality time" with my dbx 231s getting "intimate" with each (useful) frequency.

I finally had everything set (by ear) and decided to give it a little more sparkle... so I upped 4KHz by +3dB.

10 bucks says this is the cause.

Here's the curve, and I was able to follow the "subtractive eq'ing" rule:

At work so cant listen right now, but look forward to it. I have to ask/mention...Cool collection of Rockman effects!! What all you running? I have a Rockman Chorus. My only peave with it is that if its in the chain, I have to use it. So, looks like I have to set it up with a designated amp and an A/B switch..

Very cool... Very cool!

Your tone is just a bit rawer. That's what I hear... Not only in the harmonics in the main rythm, but also in the openish chord around 0:20-21... Ed's tone is a bit more open...

I kinda associated this with you using a custom... I wish you could try this all with some hot a2 PAF... I would not be surprised if you were to nail that tone for good.

Well, I have the:

- Rockman Sustainor (rev 1)
- Rockman Distortion Generator
- Rockman Stereo Chorus
- Rockman Stereo Echo
- Rockman MIDI Octopus

The whole system is actually designed to plug straight into the board (or DAW); otherwise, you'll need a power
amp and some full-frequency speakers (not guitar cabs).

I use the Sustainor's CLN2 for sparkly SS cleans, and the Stereo Echo / Stereo Delay from time to time
to enhance guitar tracks.

The distorted tone on the Distortion Generator sounds better than the Sustainor to my ears.

When you have everything hooked up it sounds really good, but nothing beats a tube amp.

IIRC, Scholz used these for all the guitars on "Third Stage".

You should be able to use that Chorus and punch it in and out with a footswitch.

Getting closer and closer! What amp are you using (the rockaman stuff) and how is the mic positioned?

Love the Rockman breakdown by the way, I had a chance to get a handful of those units and when I went back when I had the cash they were gone...bummer.

Also, subtractive EQ is best, but don't be afraid to boost if you need to!

The Rockman text is just a tangent here; no Rockman gear was used here, just good ol' Marshall tube power.

They sell them all the time on EBay (where I got "reunited" with mine) although the Stereo Echo typically sells for around $4-500...

...but it is generally accepted as the best stereo analog delay out there.

Re: Tone Cloning: Feel Your Love Tonight - Van Halen

Sounds pretty close. Most people probably wouldn't even notice a difference.

My only criticism is that there seems to be a spike in the upper midrange that's not in the original tone. Almost sounds like a JB was used. A little less high mids and a little more low to (LOL) mid mids and you should nail it.

Re: Tone Cloning: Feel Your Love Tonight - Van Halen

OP stated it was a SD Custom that was used. And Sorry LLL I don't see where you say what type of amp was used other than 'marshall' alsok, any insight on mic placement?

It's a Marshall that I modded... long story. A 90s JTM45 reissue that at one time 12 years ago I changed from stock (sounded like ass) to vintage '66 JTM type circuit.

Then, 3 years ago IIRC I modded it again and changed it to a superlead type circuit running 6CA7s.

I also modded it (bias range) so I could run a variac on it (100v).

So, you take this aforementioned modded Marshall amp, then slave it into my '67 Fender Deluxe.

Speaker out to 1x12 Alnico Gold, Shure SM57 straight on dead center, 1" away.
