Tone knob wah wah

I like to use my guitar tone knob for doing wah wah type tone when I'm playing pentatonic scales or hammer ons. I went to get a low friction pot and the luthier suggested a different taper on the tone pot. Think he said "linier taper".
Anybody have any experience with this type of tone pot?

Re: Tone knob wah wah

Thx for the tip bud. I will check this out.

I really like using my Crybaby for a wah sound.

:)

It’s kind of a fun add-on, but to be honest JB_From_Hell makes a good point... a regular wah pedal is much easier to use.

That being said, I find that it works great for soloing while playing away from the stage (ie: in the middle of the crowd). It’s also a midboost, so you can set it to give you more volume when using the wah or to just be a solo boost on the guitar.

Re: Tone knob wah wah

Every now and again I get in a mood and do a little subtle tone-knob wah.

I prefer linear taper for Tone and audio/log taper for volume. Our ears hear things in a weird way, with a linear taper on the tone pot there is a more even change in tone through the taper where as with a audio taper the change is mostly at the end of the range. But due to how our ears work the opposite is true with volume and an audio taper is more even and a linear taper will have little change until the end.

I prefer the reverse
Linear Volume
Audio Tone

To each his own

Here’s an interesting thing with the taper on that GuitarFetish unit that I gave you the link to. When I was still in the shopping phase, one of the drawbacks to this unit is that it only functions as a tone control when the unit is on… So you have to sacrifice your tone control when you haven’t got the boost/wah engaged. I was hoping to maybe do something with a push pull pot that would allow me to still have a tone control with the unit off, but when I talked to them about it they told me that the pot they use is a special taper where most of the play is at the BEGINNING of the taper so that the wah is easier to use. Now that I have the unit, I can see what they mean. When you’re trying to do you wah effect with your pinky finger on a guitar knob, it’s DEFINITELY better to have most of the play at the beginning, as it’s more difficult to get a full rotation.

I use the regular YJM Speed Pots for tone for the wah thing. I do that all the time- learned it from watching Steve Morse, actually.

Re: Tone knob wah wah

I much prefer using an autowah with the most subtle settings.
I can move around and don't depend of pinky acrobatics. Also, it sounds juicy. :D
