Tone Shaping on Amps

I got a quick question. Today, my friend brought over his JCM 800 head (with horizontal inputs) and we played it with my cabinet and guitars. I'm not sure what kind of tubes he had in there, but with his amp, we got a nice tone with the treble on about 6 and the mids at about 5. With my amp though, to get around the same tone, the mids were at 3.5 and the treble at 2. Is it normal for there to be such a difference in the settings on amps that are pretty much the same?

Re: Tone Shaping on Amps

That's extremely normal. Amps are all made with different components, so a flat EQ on one amp won't sound anything like a flat EQ on another.

Re: Tone Shaping on Amps

Your not only talking about differences in types of tubes, but also their condition. That along with slight differences in caps, resistors, pots, trannys and all sorts of other things add up.
