Im running an iceman with jb into a fender twin reverb and im looking for a distortion pedal that can give me a warm and colorful tone like jason becker or marty friedmans. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Re: Tone suggestions?

the best thing to do is bring your guitar to a music store and try a bunch. twins are easy to find so you can probably find a twin to use in the store.

i like barber, jetter, and catalinbred dirt pedals. very musical and full sounding

Re: Tone suggestions?

Something to remember here is that both of the players you mention got a significant portion of their distorted tones from high-gain amplifiers and probably not ultra-clean Fenders with dirt boxes in front of them.

That's not to say it can't be done or you won't be happy - but keep your expectations realistic by knowing that you're taking a different route than the people you're trying to emulate.

Re: Tone suggestions?

I have the Boss DS-1 (probably THE most popular distortion pedal EVER) and i dont like it... But I mainly use a Fender Mustang Floor unit. I have fell in a love affair if you will with processors, since you can make it emulate basically any amp you want if you set it correctly. I would recommend looking into something along the lines of the Mustang Floor, Boss makes an AWESOME processor, and Digitech makes good ones as well. I think my next actual PEDAL purchase will be the Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster or the Dirty Deeds pedal. From what I have listened to online, they sound awesome.

As such, I would suggest an amp-in-a-box type pedal, like a Wampler Pinnacle or SLOstortion, Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret, or one of the Tech21 Character Series pedals.

Good point.

Do those pedals work best in the front end of an amp, or are they more like a preamp you would use in the loop?

The Wamplers in particular are voiced to work best in front of a clean Fender, actually. But all of them work with amps.

Bogner Extasy Red.

I have one and like it best in front of my SuperSonic 60, and I've tried one in front of a Hot Rod Deluxe, so I have no doubt one would sound great in front of your Twin.

And yes, they live up to the hype.

OCDs are good for high gain with twins. you can also boost the ocd with a tube screamer or similar and have wailing lead tones for days.

The problem most have with the DS1 is exactly this;

First problem - bad amp choice.
Second, the DS-1 was invented to run into a classic gain Marshall.

Run a DS-1 into a Tube amp that is distorting in the "average" range - you'll see why it is great/popular/classic.

DS-1 into solid state for all the dirt? Or to push it? FAIL….

However - consider the Keeley Ultra mod version then.

Re: Tone suggestions?

I play a Fender and have found the MXR+ and DOD 250 sound the best with that amp. If you want to go over the top try to find an old Chandler/Butler Tube Driver it will make that Twin sing. That being said I think Jeremy had the best suggestion go audition a bunch of pedals and find what suits your ear. BTW my main setup for years was the 100 watt Fender with an Iceman and a MXR+.
