Tonebone pedals-holy smokes!

I just tried out both the classic distortion and the hot british. Totally awesome pedals. I know the subject of "Marshall in a box" has come up before-these pedals are the real deal. :fing2:

They use a 12ax7 tube and they really can make your fender sound like a marshall (or mesa, or soldano, etc.) Incredibly versatile. The Hot British can go from Cream to Van Halen to Metallica and then some-incredible amount of gain. The Classic seemed to be a little tamer-it can get a cleaner distorted sound, like SRV, but it will also do serious heavy metal .

Anyone want to share their experience with these pedals?

The only thing I didnt like, BTW, was the 15volt power supply-I dont think my pedal board can accomadate that. :dunno:

Radial's products are very good.
I have my eye on a Headbone VT tube head switcher for live use.

I agree, Tonebone's pedals are all top notch in my book. I may think about getting a Hot British to cover the high gain territory when I get my modern gain amp in tomorrow.

Re: Tonebone pedals-holy smokes!

I've had the Hot British and Classic for about a year now. I refer to the Classic as my "Plexi" and the Hot British as my "5150." I'm not saying that they sound just like those amps, but the Classic seems to have the right flavor for a Zeppelin, blues, VH2 type of thing. For the Hot British, think along the lines of "Fire in the Hole" off VH3. This thing will peel the paint off the wall if you want. Talk about low end chunk! I seem to get the best sound from these pedals using humbuckers, but thats me. The controls are active so there's a ton of possibilities with both. It may take a while to find a tone from either that will work for you because it's not just a plug in and play pedal. But when you do find the tone, look out!

Mike M,

Are you able to get a good Plexi tone out of the Hot British? I was experimenting for awhile, but I found the Classic did the AC/DC tone a little better than the Hot British, which seemed too Hot even at low settings (unless you turn the guitar's volume down of course)

Re: Tonebone pedals-holy smokes!

Last week I heard a friend using the older Classic pedal; very nice! I'd consider one, but it's not worth the money to me for one sound at a time. Now if it had the capability of switching between off and 2 different sounds (light dirt/higher gain) it would be a bargain, IMO.

Re: Tonebone pedals-holy smokes!

I just bought a JX-2 Switchbone, and it's very nice as well. Silent switching, no hum, nice mid boost and tuner mute functions. The drag control will take some tweaking to get used to it, and I have other gain boost pedals that I like a little more, but this AB/Y pedal is very versatile and useful.

A Plexi tone from the Hot British? In my opinion I would say no. The HB is a hot rod, for sure and it handles things that require a Mesa/5150 type of distortion. You'd be much better off with the Classic pedal for song's that require a Plexi "flavor." Think AC/DC, live Zeppelin, Van Halen II...the Classic is good for those kind of things. I'm not saying the Classic pedal sounds just like a Plexi but again, for that kind of a flavor it does well.
