Tonelabs SE survives honeymoon phase, however...

I don't think this is the newest thing on the block, yet it surprises me how good it is. I wish it had more going for it in terms of metal chug as my old SS head had much better response and definition for that..but this tonelabs has so much more to it that I really can do without that for a while.

I like how the attack of each note colorfully plays out when you shred fast. Also the cleans are almost everything I could ask for and the mid and Mild gains are obviously where this thing shines...and maybe I'm getting older inside but thats where I'm starting to play more and more.

I never had a chance to get a power amp and plug it into my stereo guitar cab at home (I'm away right now), but just jamming through computer speakers alone its alright.

I don't know if its just the speakers I'm playing through but it seems to prefer neck pickups.

Don't know if I'll stay digital long term. I played live with it a few months ago at church and recall having issues hearing it clearly..bummer. But for playing and recording its just great.

I did find however that when I used stompboxes into it there was a bit improvement in the cut when I turned the AMP sims OFF...I'm thinking that if I got a good preamp or pedal that may be the solution for the deficiencies it has in playing live.

I know of the Mesa V-Twin, but what other pedals/preamps would you suggest. I'm looking for at least 2 channels. As versatile as possible..I love clean to harcore and everything in between. Then I'd basicly just use the tonelabs instead of a rackmount for effects...but still have the option to leave the amp and extras at home and play with just the TL at a small coffehouse gig or something.

Any thoughts?

Well, just for starters you need to get decent headphones. You can't really evaluate a metal rig through computer speakers.

I have the ST here and it does metal fine. Does yours have the same amp models?

Ok let me back up a bit. Before I left home I had plenty of time to play it through my PA system. My conclusions were the same based on that. Tone for metal is great, theres just not the response I want for playing it. To be fair it does do a good job.

I think it does. I was under the impression the SE and ST were just different variations of the same processor.

To be clear, the only thing I wish it could do better is low drop D riffs. Everything I try is OK but just a little too loose or something to hit the spot. Do you have any samples of metal just so I can see if I'm just not setting it up good or something?

I play my ToneLab LE exclusively through a Fender 40 watt Pro Reverb amp and love it....Read thoroughly through the manual, learn what the unit does, turn alot of knobs and give it enough time to grow on you...There's a learning curve with these modeling effects..

Not yet. The stock patches on the ST have a lot of metal presets. I have a made a few but I don't have the library software hooked up or I'd send them to you.

Re: Tonelabs SE survives honeymoon phase, however...

Oh wait, Maybe the SE shares same patches as the LE...I'm not sure. But if thats the case it probably wouldn't be relevant enough anyway. Oh well.

Re: Tonelabs SE survives honeymoon phase, however...

You could go to the Vox site and probably find some patches for your unit and maybe the stock ST patches too?

Re: Tonelabs SE survives honeymoon phase, however...

Weeelllllll...An opportunity presented itself..

Don't know if you know much about ship life..but a while back we crossed the equator, and we're having a (somewhat delayed) crossing the line ceremony.

Started with a talent show today. yay.

So I got to try out playing live again (such divine timing I might add).

Just jammed a short blues set with another guy here. He was borrowing a fender reissue of some sort..50 watt tube. Sounded fab..I played mostly lead using my tonelabs through the small pa we had. It defineatly rocked. Maybe I just need to plug straight into the PA for the best sound on these.

Jammed a couple metal riffs in passing. Definately sounded decent! I guess my main dissapointment is with the RECTO simulation. It is just not very aggressive. I can use the TREBLE BOOSTER pedal patch to get it there but it just doesn't sound as good as the other AMPS.

Everyone cheered and we won by the way..getting free tickets out of certain events...hmmm
