Tonewizard and poplar?

I have always heard that poplar is quite similar to alder when used as body wood, but the Tonewizard lets you choose between [ash or alder] and [poplar]. That would suggest that ash is more like alder than poplar. How come

Re: Tonewizard and poplar?

I guess cos alot of fender are ash/alder and some people won't know which models are which and it basically means a general fender type design. I don't actually know but that seems to make sense to me.

Re: Tonewizard and poplar?

I was under the impression that ash is brighter than alder and that it often could be wise to choose a warmer sounding pup for ash guitars. Warmoth describes different wood on their website and they say that alder & poplar are somewhat similar (poplar generally being a little heavier) and that ash is a brighter sounding wood.

Re: Tonewizard and poplar?

From a woodworking perspective, Poplar is much more like Basswood than Alder. It's softer and less dense which would lead me to believe that it's probably not as bright sounding.

Re: Tonewizard and poplar?

I find it more similar to alder than basswood still.

It just seems like a heavy sounding piece of alder.
