too many choices....its a problem

Im making a Les Paul copy and it might be chambered (undecided). I want a guitar that can pretty much do everything well, from rythm to lead and from ac/dc to guns and roses to nickelback. I know I should be chosing for myself to get "my sound" but right now Im overwhelmed with the amount of pickup choices. I would love if somone would chime in and point me in the right direction.

Re: too many choices....its a problem

I believe the most widely respected and recommended LP setup is the JB for bridge and the Jazz for neck. Good for both clean and overdriven tones. That is, if we talk about Seymour Duncan pickups.

Re: too many choices....its a problem

thanks for that suggestion. Does any one here have something that they'ev noticed/that sounds bad about these pups. Keep in mind there going in a possibly chambered mahogany guitar. I don't want them to sound too dark.

Re: too many choices....its a problem

Dunno about mahogony, but I would seriously reccomend 'hollowing out' bits of the guitar, especially if rhythm playing is involved, and especially if you already have a fully solid guitar. It'll change your sound for the better, IMO - and from what people have said about the JB in relation to my epiphone 335, those pups will still do u good. Myself, I'm gonna get either a JB or a '59 for my axe.

PS - welcome to the forum!

Re: too many choices....its a problem

I know many feel you can play "anything" with a JB but I don't agree. It sounds a bit compressed and the upper mid spike doesn't play well clean for my taste. If you want versatile but still with kick I would look at a 59, Demon, or Seth Lover.

Re: too many choices....its a problem

For the guitar you're describing, I would go with either a Pearly Gates set or a Seth Lover set. Assuming that you have enough gain from your amp, you should be able to cover pretty much any style with those pickups.

I also think that the JB is a bit too compressed and has a nigh mid spike that some people find abrasive.
