Lol okay CORRECTION - it just LOOKS to have 5 mags. Weird azz epoxy or something spacers that pass a screwdriver scratch and hold a sharp edge...but ain't magnetic.

Original lol:

"Seriously, this is getting to be too much. Web lore says this baby has ONE ceramic mag, for example.

Try FIVE????

You certain those aren't spacers? Anyway - Here's a Lace Sensor I will rewind someday, when I want to pay $200 for the correct wire.

To explain - The actual bobbin is enameled metal wound with very high-gauge wire- The magnetic field is directed through the bobbin. The coil drops into a heavy piece of metal coated in- basically- soft plastic refrigerator magnets. The coil is surrounded by magnets, making the north polarity the entire outside of the pickup, while the south polarity is the actual bobbin.

Modern Lace sensors are built the exact same way (I took one of those apart too - the only difference is no aluminum baseplate.)

Side mags, people, secondary side mags... quite widely used, for example in Gibson 500t and Gibson Dirty Fingers.

Here's an illustration of the difference between side mags and spacers, illustrated by two different Gibson pups

As to the cheapie Korean Duncan Designeds, it seems the Koreans found it uneconomical to source double-thick side mags and simply stacked 2 normal thickness side mags on each side

I like side magnets. And spacer magnets.
Still hoping to find some ceramic spacers that I can try adding to a JB with the standard A5.

Take note that at least some (maybe most, possibly - all?) multimagnet pickups apparently run reverse polarity on the smaller mags... at least according to a few other sources on the web.

Might be worth researching.

Yes. They're squeezing the field of the primary pickup.

Yeah, those are definitely rubber spacers and not two magnets stacked on top of each other.

Re: TOO much false info on web - post pics and info on pups YOU'VE torn down

So the thread looking to correct all the false information on the web has false information?

Re: TOO much false info on web - post pics and info on pups YOU'VE torn down

...or not. My bad.

Damn things are some kinda hard-as-nails epoxy or something. Screwdriver won't scratch, premium boxcutter blade will -- but then again, it also scratches cheap metal and ceramic too.

I've only seen maple/wood or soft plastic spacers in pickups before.

Got curious, chipped off a corner with great effort, nope, non-magnetic. Whoops.

Hmmm... does the actual Seymour Invader really use 3 mags or is that this same stuff, too?

Why you think Seymour would lie?

Re: TOO much false info on web - post pics and info on pups YOU'VE torn down

I believe the Invader actually uses 3 magnets.

Well, as the original shameless marketing and knockoff artiste in the field of pickups...insinuating non-existent Jeff Beck and Van Halen endorsements, ripping off Bill Lawrence, borrowing a name from DiMarzio, etc.... why not?

"guy named Seymour Duncan – you probably know him – I I got pissed at him too. He called me up and said, “Can we use your name for a special pickup?” And I said no. Next time I pick up Guitar Player magazine, there’s a special Van Halen model customized Duncan pickup. So I called him up and said, “What the hell’s goin’ on?” So he stopped, finally. It’s just kind of weird, you know." -Eddie Van Halen, 1979

That said....which possible lie are you referring to?

I believe the Invader actually uses 3 magnets.

Some dude on here claimed he found em to be non magnetic spacers, too... and I tried but failed to find the source claim about 3 mags

Gibson DF and 500t, yes, DBZ Zelinski somethingorother, yes, Iommi, yes....invader? Not sure

If so though, wonder what getting some somewhere and adding them in place of spacers would do

I question all research. Some unknown idiot posting a pic and saying "Look at all the magnets!?!?!?!?!" doesn't get a a 1/2 second of my attention.

I'll be sending you the bill for the time it took to read this thread. I want that time added back to my life, or you can pay me at my hourly rate in cash.

As for Ed - he is pissed off at everyone. Whatever...
