tools needed for scalloping a fretboard.

I have a cheap $40 guitar I want to try and scallop the board on for practice, so I can scallop my old Strat, so what tools do I need?

I have a rough idea of
round file (any particular size?)
some super fine (like 1000+?) sand paper or even steel wool?
tape?

anything else?

thanks!

It's not fun if thats what you think. I have done it a few times, Once on an entire fretboard, its a huge pain in the ass to get right. You will need a few round files and a semi round.

Start at the last fret that way if get tired of doing it you can just do the last four or even up to the 12th.

If you're keen on trying it on the cheap you could just buy this, http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Clear-Gl...105847?hash=item43e46c3637:g:~hIAAOxyLchRwrXA

that's a good idea...

and I know it isn't fun, but I really like scalloped boards and it costs a lot of money here.

j.e.c had a jig that could be used for it. Man that would be the ultimate.

I wonder how they do it in the factory. i doubt its by hand.

Okay, I clicked the link and logged in and now my account gives everything in AU dollars and even says "G'Day Trey!" at the top...: popworm:

I did 5 frets on one of my Charvels, round file and sandpaper (you can get it very smooth without having to reach 1000 grit). I think the round file was 1/4 and it was the perfect size for the end couple.

And lots os masking tape, protect those frets!

and some nice steady hands will make quick work of it.

If you want to smooth it out get some of these

but you must must must use the regulator. If not you will go too fast and the bit will bounce and you will make dings where you dont want them.

The main thing you'll need is a camera, because we can hardly wait to see the neck when it's dest......I mean done! :fingersx:

Here's one i did, this was my first guitar. I traded it for a plywood strat and a nice case. Sold the strat now i wish i had the acoustic.

For the frst time, you´re on teh right track. Masking tape to protect the frets (or if you want to spend a bit more money, 3m makes an aluminum tape which does an excellent job, it`s usually used to repair holes in an aircraft´s skin), a rat tail file that fits betwen the highest frets and a half round file for the larger spaces, sandpaper for the finishing and to take out imperfections, and copious amounts of patience and elbow grease.

Take your time, and err on the side of too shallow instead of too deep. You can always make them deeper later, but you can only scallopwn yourself and your neck once. ;)

Good luck. I would never want more than a light scallop and then only on the top 5 frets.
