totally newbie

hi y'all

I've been playing forever, though about 10 years ago I stopped playing electric.
*sigh*... yes, I am sorry, I have to admit I sold my old Mosrite at a yard sale. Been acoustic since. But, just the other day I found in my moms house a old gibson body that I bought because the frets were scalloped out, completely devoid of any electronics.

I want to get this horse up and running and I don't know the first thing about electronics or anything, but I want to do it myself - I figure it can't be too hard. All I should need is a couple of good pickups and some other little pieces of parts and it should be all set, right? There is way too much info on the web, do any you folks here have any good sign posts for a newbie like me? Where do I go first?

Welcome to the forum Kevin! You already have the correct attitude, and you are in the right place for help.

To better help you can you tell us what style you are wanting to play, and what type of amp you are going to use? etc??

That goes a long way in helping recommend pups.

If all the holes are in the right places you should have no problem with hardware, and there are bunch of wiring diagrams and tips in the SD main site.

Welcome aboard, Kevin. Those two pretty much summed it up. A lot of the parts you buy, especially the pups, will have good instructions on how to install them, so you should be good to go. Let us know what you have and what you're looking for, and we'll get you going in the right direction.

thank you, yeah I guess I should check to see the serial number first, get a reality check on what I'm dealin with.

I can't read wiring diagrams at all, might as well be chinese. So, I guess I'll have to figure that out,too ... at aleast a little.

Haven't got an amp yet, but I'm leaning towards a fender acoustic amp. I plan on mostly doing home recording, primarily with my other instruments, which will all be miked in some fashion. but, (since I have an electric guitar! :laugh2: ), I'll want to get some noisy riffs now and then, ala jimmy page or kurt cobain.

I don't expect it to be pretty, but I prefer the versitile work horse concept. I used to play in punk rock bands, so I like electric guitars that can stand a beating. I am thinking a P90 pup will serve nicely, obviously if I am going to spend money on it, I'll put the money there... What are the price ranges for those sort of pups?

Is there a web site that spells out in 'dummy' terms, the wiring for a guitar? It seems obvious, but when I start looking at pickup info it gets pretty technical real fast.

What D!ck (Jackson) was asking is what model guitar, is it a Les Paul, SG, marauder?? Not really the serial number.

SD makes P90's as well as humbucker sized P90's. Pup prices can go from about 65-180 (custom shop). Most Duncans cost around 70 dollars.

For the amp I wouldn't really recommend an accoustic amp for an regular electric guitar.

Wiring is very easy and we can help you if you don't know the symbols too. The SD website has some great schematics, also each pup comes with schematics too.

OK!

Well then Phat Cats (humbucker sized P90s) are something you can look into if you like the P90 tone. If you like P90 tone and have humbucker sized holes this is the place to look!

For Page stuff PAF style pups are the way to go. 59's give you a lot of his tonal characteristics.

Cobain, I'd go with the one of the Custom series bridge buckers.

That is saying you wanted humbuckers, in the end your ears are your guide, don't be afraid to mix and match.
