Tracking (live) guitars w pics

Darkness on the edge of Tone
I had forgotten how spoiled I have been over the past year with reamping guitar tracks! Tracking live guitars is very labor intensive as you have to play musician, engineer, and producer. Am almost ready to start dialing in tones now! :)

Once you find the sweet spot(s) on the speaker, you're good to go.

I gotta say though, once I got my UA LA610MkII preamp, things got much easier.

Agree on both counts! It's been a very productive weekend, I actually completed recording of all the guitar tracks. The LA610 is a great piece, I am quite jealous! :) I usually use my SSL for tracking solo instruments. On the last album, as I used a dynamic microphone, the Neve worked better for many of the tracks, but I went back to the SSL for this one.

A couple samples of style (disclaimer: these are raw, unmixed tracks without vocals or finished drums and bass):

Re: Tracking (live) guitars w pics

Thanks! :)

It was fun tracking the guitars live, but I am definitley going back to reamping next time; in the end (for me, at least) I realized that there is not a significant advantage to tracking guitars live, and is actually a disadvantage. With reamping, I can use a sim on the DI that will get me close enough, and then worry about the technical stuff later, instead of dealing with all of it at once.

The first pic could be an album cover photo!

Wow, the volume/output sure looks low on some pedals (Horus, distortion +).

Happy recording

Heh, that photo was taken before I started setting levels, which is why they are so low. :)

In the final version of the pedal board, I substituted the SHO for the Greer Sweetback Driver, and added Toe-knee's Multiplex echo for lead guitar.
