It has a great clean channel and a great dirty channel. The dirty channel is not per se a highgain channel. So if you are looking for mesa recto type of distortion channel, this may well not be for you. However, if you are looking for a medium gain, blues/classic rock voiced dirty channel, my Traynor 40W would kill most of the amp out there under $1500 price range. I had JCM800. Traynor ate it alive. I had Soldano Lucky 13. Traynor killed it. I have Rivera Chubster. Tryanor is kicking its butt.
Please don't ever buy it. I want fewer people know how good it is.

I can't believer Brisk thinks it kills the chubster. Amazing for Traynor. I want one of the new blue models, but definitely don't need another amp now.

These new Traynors are nice affordable tube amps! These are not the same Traynor amps of the 70's that most remember as being tone-less! I want the 20 watter in Wine Red with a real GreenBack speaker!!!! Cool amps for the cash. I did find the new Blue soaped up higain model a bit noisey but they are just as noisey as the Marshall 2000 combos

They are Canadian amps.
Here in Canada, you see Traynors EVERYWHERE you go. Every jam, every gig is powered by Traynors. They are good sounding amps. I'd say they're more like the fender Hot Rod, but better. That's all I can really say about Traynors LOL. If it sounds loud, thick, and warm - I'm in.
I have to say though, that once I played through a JCM900 halfstack, nothing will ever be the same again.

Oh. and the best thing about Traynors here in Ontario, is that they're always cheapest. Our largest music chain: Long & McQuade endorses Traynor amps. You can get an 80 watt 4x10 combo Traynor for 940 bucks (Canadian that is).

I played both amps. Traynor 40w and Fender HRD.
Traynor have better feature than Fender and the dirty channel is much better than the HRD.
But, I chose the HRD for his clean channel. Traynor is good but the HRD sound much better when you want to play Pop or Blues. I love the tone of my HRD but would not mind to play with the Traynor cause it a very good amp.

What about the actual amount of clean headroom between these two amps? Which amp has more room to work with? I have yet to try a Traynor, but when I did try a HRD I was disapointed with how fast the clean channel broke up. Not much headroom. The tone itself was great, just broke up too fast.

MIKE M.= You're right about the headroom but the HRD was made with the purpuse of playing Blues mostly and Fender wanted to get good natural overdrive with the clean channel. There's some brand of tubes that can get a bit more headroom though.
Also, the reverb on the HRD is much better compare to the Traynor. Overall, the Traynor is very good but the clean tone of the Fender was a must for me.

gotta aska bout the chubster again
I've played the ycv40 and while the cleans were phenomenal, the dirty channel just didn't get enough gain for me
i recenlty played a rivera quiana and lthought it was fantastic
did the traynor really beat the chubster on the marshall side too

Chubster has two EL34 and Traynor has two 6L6. So Traynor has smoother and more balanced dirty channel (not really marshall sound). Chubster has darker thicker fatter dirty channel (dark british sound = marshall). If you are up for marshall sound, I'd go with chubster. If you are up for more articulate and transparent distortion, I'd go with traynor.
They are just different amp but I am really really impressed by Traynor.

Amazing cleans, no gain channel. The natural distortion from it I don't like, so I use a pedal. It's meant as a PA though. If I boost the cleans to drive it, I can get good overdrive from it but it takes pretty radical EQ to get it right.

So.... if I were to stick my Epi 335 through a traynor tube combo (possibly with a boss overdrive pedal in front - reckon the results would be good? I'm a clean-to-medium gain blues rocker - oasis, white stripes, radiohead, that kinda thing. Thanks for all the contributions, by the way.

You won't need the pedal. My amp was designed as a PA and it has no gain channel.
